But seriously, the term "democracy" is unbelievably broad but if we look at it as a continuum, it has certainly gone (very slowly) in one direction for, roughly, the past 300-400 years.
Starting with the English revolutions in the 1600s, the general public has gained power and the state has had its power limited. So no, the US in the late 1700s wasn't a democracy compared to today's government, but it was certainly FAR more democratic than governments in the 17th, 16th, 15th etc. centuries.
And sure, things COULD turn around, nothing's automatic, but I don't think it's happening anytime soon. We have certain bumps in the road (like Trump's authoritarian tendencies, for example) but they're just that, bumps. It's actually actually pretty telling that we freak out this much over what Trump's doing.
Do you seriously think the State's power has been limited by democracy?
