To be fair that's because there was a bunch of different churches in the colonies and they didn't want any one of them becoming privileged by the state. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't want Americans to share a general set of Protestant values and in truth they likely did. Its not an accident that Catholic and Jewish immigrants faced discrimination upon coming here. The same people talking about "muh Judeo-Christian values" would've been talking about Protestant values a century ago.

The Irish is the perfect example of this.

Irish look JUST like people from England but because they were Catholic they were generally treated like shit when they got off the boat.

The opening sequence in Gangs of New York highlights this perfectly. Hell on Wheels touches on it a bit when Mickey's brother keeps hitting on that pastor's daughter and she responds with the "but, you're Catholic, we can't get married"
