Cooling issues mostly. On video cards, motherboard vrms and laptops. Especially with AMD products for some reason.



Personally I only use desktops, but I've gotten a lot of Asus laptops for family members and the only recurring issue I've had is with hinges getting stuck and the casing breaking.
You also have to find the exact spec for the GPU used in all gaming laptops, because the cooling, ram and GPU frequency (mhz) and precise model (Max-Q etc) makes a massive difference even when they are frequently advertised as the same spec.

I've noticed cooling issues too. My Asus laptop is usually up atound 40C. Haven't had any hinges or casing breaking, though. I haven't used a desktop in decades and have no interest in ever going back to them. I'd just really like to get a good 4K laptop.

The hinges are less of an issue with their desktop replacement and high end models, where they use less plastic in the construction. If you've got an alloy bezel you're unlikely to snap it trying to open a frozen hinge. Also in their high end models they often have just the one mainboard configuration in the chassis, whereas the cheaper offerings will be used with so many configurations there's often a lot of compromises.
Heat issues really have an impact on the performance and lifespan of modern GPUs though. They determine the operating speed and frequently hitting high temps and throttling can lead to the BGA cracking from the temperature cycling. I used to fix laptops with those issues all the time (reflow the board). More Dells than Asus units though at that stage.
At least with a higher end 4K desktop replacement unit I think you're less likely to encounter those issues. Still worth checking the temperatures and exact GPU spec though, for both performance and reliability (I'd just run furmark burnintest on them).
