Anymore, I think the only interesting relationship subplots on television are non-traditional ones like gay couples, interracial couples, or mixed faith couples, mostly because it's not territory that has been comprehensively explored by previous sitcoms.

For instance, one of the only things I enjoyed about Shameless was the depiction of a same sex relationship in the early seasons between a gay kid and a very heteronormative, uber-aggressive partner. Likewise, the similar (feminine gay vs. heteronormative gay) relationship in Schitt's Creek is very captivating to me, although I was surprised to realize that I'm still kind of grossed out by dudes kissing one another.

Can't think of any other on-screen relationships that I thought were interesting. Maybe the couple from The Americans.

Tbh even those relationships I find are often not that interesting because the writing for them feels firmly nestled within the wider meta-discussions and culture wars(i.e. they have an SJW vibe).

I prefer age gap relationships, especially ones where the guy is younger, since its out of the ordinary but not relevant to these wider culture war issues that can make media feel very preachy and also I think its kinda hot. One of my favorite romance movies is Song to Song about a romance between hipster musicians Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara and one of the reasons I like it is because at one point they split up and start seeing other people; Mara hooks up with a lipstick lesbian and Gosling with a woman ~10 years his senior played by Cate Blanchett. Definitely would not recommend that movie though, super experimental and definitely an acquired taste.

In general I like well researched historical romance since those relationships occur within the context of radically different norms surrounding marriage, sex, and love. A historical romance that just reflects modern values is the kind that I really fucking hate though. I don't see the point in using a historical backdrop for thoroughly modern characters, at that point just ditch the historical setting or don't project modern values onto historical characters.
