I find it odd that caring for your fellow countrymen is so looked down upon by "nationalists"

My theory:
Many nationalists care about "the nation" as an entity unto itself, rather than an association of the people.

The nation is the thing that matters. So other people only matter insofar as they contribute to that. If you don't, you should be punished. So they don't see treating large swathes of people as shit as negatively affecting the nation, even though those people are just as much a part of it as anything else. Instead, they're reallocating resources away to things that better serve the nation. And, at the same time, justly punishing those leeches.

Political dissidents? They're dividing us! The poor? They don't pull their weight!
Minorities? Ethnic homogeny reduces social stress! (Or said minorities are inferior, etc). Religious group? They're loyal to something else! Comics? They make the nation look foolish.

Boomers are the worst people on the entire planet. Their selfishness is astounding.

At work, they are always the ones conspiring against people that actually do work, and they unfortunately hold most if not all the positions of power despite not knowing how to use current technology very well. I had this one stupid bitch always causing me problems, and yet she would send emails with silly errors like "The the presentation today is for 4:00PM" "I lik to think we can all agree on the accounts"

I was saying the other day that even if we ignore trolls at a 98% rate (and most of us, me for sure, manage it way less than that), that still results in total chaos. Just one in 50, and that sustains them. We really have to commit to a 100% rate of ignoring that stuff. It's hard though, because it's so ripe for laughs.
