When push comes to shove they seem to prefer the Jewish state part over the liberal democracy one. I think they are destined for an illiberal democracy which privileges the Jews explicitly over everyone else. Some would probably argue that if they weren't already there before, they are now with the passing of that law.

When confronted with the tension between their nature as a Jewish state and a democracy they seem to have always preferred the former over the latter. The alternative would be to sacrifice the Jewish nature of their state and wholly integrate the Palestinians into their society but that to me seems far less likely.

When haven't they? From the beginning of the Zionist project the primary goal was to establish a homeland for the Jews. When they expanded their territory they didn't just take the territory, they also expelled hundreds of thousands of Palestinians because they were a liability for the Jewish state and that was under leftist leadership. Not saying you're wrong but the general historical trend seems to suggest they value their Jewish nature over their democratic and liberal one. And like I said earlier, I do get it on some level even if in practice I think its a mistake.

I'd say the late 60s, which saw an expansion of rights to nonjewish citizens and rollback of discriminatory practices and the second Rabin coalition, which worked with Arab leaders instead of ignoring then (like some other left-wing leaders) or being actively hostile (Netanyahu).

But I agree with your points wrt it's founding and current direction.
