I created a site that has generated 5 referrals for divorce and custody actions so far.. One of them was a man who owned a fairly large business, and his divorce action would be HUGE. I'm not a member of the Bar, so I generally cannot take referral fees. My dad being technologically impaired, and a hater, would not refer them out for me, costing me the money I would have needed to get back to even and take the bar. One of the only times I yelled really loud at my dad. He let his insurance lapse because he is semi-retired and "doesn't want to refer anything out to somebody he doesn't know in another state." The referrals I made were to large(ish) highly rated firms in their areas, and I checked the ethics by-laws to make sure that the referral policy of that state only said "Member of A state Bar."
Anyways, being that my "smart" dad isn't helping me with money outside of the work I do for him, which is sparing now, needless to say in my position I'm a little salty about him turning away 1/3 of 25k or so on my behalf.
I started something I could have monetized for enough money to get back to where I needed to be, and it was shot down.
