Crime Wait, what? There was a school shooting in Texas yesterday?

Here's a quote from his mother's friend

He brought the gun as self defense?
As if everyone in school is packing heat?
Riiiiiigggggghhhhht
You obviously didn't grow up in East LA like I did. I'd say 10% of students had weapons on them at Garfield high School

There were two in Texas recently weren't there? No one died in either as far as I know so there's no way to spin this that doesn't look bad for the culture that regularly engages in these activities... For some reason this culture isn't being exposed by the media or the people affected by it most...

I'm inferring that Texas has shitty public schools. It's actually quite bad. A $400,000 house is middle class and you are making out a Dodge charger to be a Mercedes. If it was a Hellcat then ok that's something else. A middle-class family isn't going to spend $25K a year on a private school when public school is free.

In Arlington 400k is about double what the typical home costs, he may have been better off than most, but the community as a whole, and the school, is fairly low-income. Which is why the media doesn't care much.

You can own any type of gun at 18. You can’t transfer a hand gun by FFL or dealers until 21. Meaning a private citizen can sell or gift a hand gun to an 18 yr old.

Not really . . . at least not like you're stating.

Normally, Texans must be at least 21 years old in order to get a license to carry a handgun (LTC). However, in 2021, HB 918 gave Texans aged 18-20 the ability to get an LTC if they are protected under certain types of protective orders or magistrate's emergency protective orders.

Additionally . . .

Texas’ law doesn't change eligibility for gun ownership. Like anyone who wants to own a handgun in Texas, you must be at least 21 years old and can not have served a sentence for a felony or family violence within the last five years.

How come he wasn’t stopped in his tracks by a great Texas citizen with a gun. I mean that’s why Texas has a shit ton of guns right? To stop the bad guys when the police are not around.

failure falls on Texas imo.

Because schools are "gun free zones" and most law abiding gun owners respect those designations . . . .

Unless this is sarcasm it's like you guys don't even put effort into things anymore.

Hey man, Republicans are wanting to arm teachers in school so it's not a misplaced argument.

We're actually wanting completely remove "gun free zones" and other soft targets. If arming certain teachers helps move in that direction then arm teachers as appropriate.

Because Texas allows open carry without a license which I feel is a bad idea. Texas has some very aggressive gun laws or I guess lack thereof, so I'm expecting incidences like this to get worse.

What I am getting at is that when you start to trivialize laws around guns it might give off the wrong impression to young people.

They didn't change the laws for legally purchasing guns. Folks still need to abide by those.

You're one of many folks who wrongly believe changes in carry laws are going to suddenly cause more deaths/shootings.

He had turned himself in, and is out on 75k bond.

A judge didn't rule him a threat, this is how it's supposed to work. Turning himself in probably helped this happen.

Right. An 18 year-old who gets bullied and then pulls out a gun later in the day to get revenge isn't a threat . . .

How would I know?

That decision was in the hands of the judge.

Point is he is obviously a threat due to his actions earlier that day . . . stupid decision by the judge IMO.

Could be.

I don't have nearly enough information to make anything but an unwarranted assumption.

Kid already out of jail on a 75k dollar bond. 75k for attempted murder on 5 people…….. wow. Walking the streets already.

Well, the tongue-in-cheek point I was making was that this was a thread specifically about the shooting and the first comment was about media and antivaxxers. Not a single word about the shooting itself.

So, it's kind of hilarious that someone would enter a thread about the shooting and start talking about the media and antivaxxers to explain why no one is talking about the shooting. They doing the very thing that they are attacking the media about.
It's really them just wanting to whine and play victim at this point... Which is also something people like that constantly complain about
