This fuckin guy stands way too close to Werdum with no fear of his striking, basically gives his front leg up for the takedown and gets single legged early and often. No fear.

I was shocked at how easily he gave up the takedown and thought he was fucked and then.... he completely stopped Werdum's top game! Fabricio couldn't even pass guard, and if he did, Volkov got back to it every single time. The GNP was mostly ineffective. Volkov got up, and stood right back in Werdum's grill like being on the ground was not an issue for him.

Volkov even got into Werdum's guard toward the end of the fight and landed a huge punch from there just before the KO.

Don't sleep on this aspect of the fight... he's the first guy to have no issue hitting the mat with Werdum, welcoming it even, and still handily won.

Mark Hunt spent the whole first round of their fight in Werdum's guard, and won the round.

Werdum is obviously a great jiujitsu fighter, but it's not mind-boggling that someone can be on the mat with him and not instantly be submitted.

Father Time was soccer kicking Werdum during top control.

Father Time is damned villian, like a young Roddy Piper, or Paul Varelans.

Werdum is world class off his back pulling off sweeps and reversals. On-top and in his opponent's full guard was meh

Reem went into werdums guard too and like the previous poster said so did hunt.

Fabricio is WerDONE.

He'll of a run, though!

Hell of a run indeed! Next time maybe walk

Honestly I was really impressed with volkov. His top control was great and moved really well for a guy so massive and against werdum of all people. Crisp strikes too. I'd put money on him getting a title shot soon.

I'm guessing the dude's working on other endeavors, and MMA is not his sole focus. I thought he'd carry the strap for a while, seeing as how he blasted through so many at HW prior to gaining the belt.

That boomerang fiasco could've been a sign of him losing focus.

He is a weird cat isn't he. Came in looking very out of shape, but yet it feels like he has the potential to hold the belt for longer than he did too and can beat anyone on a good day.

Werdum kept spamming the same sweep and Volkov got hip to it. In a 3 round fight I could see the fight going Werdum's way. Credit to Volkov for being able to maintain the guard.

He also got taken down many times by a 40-year old BJJ guy (Werdum) and a 40-year old kickboxer (Kongo). His ground game is pretty good, but Stipe, Cormier and healthy Cain could really exploit his weak wrestling/TDD.

Also his scrambling was absolutely peak in that fight.

Hunt was in Werdum's guard for less than two minutes in the first round, nowhere near a full round, and he still actively avoided the ground and got up at his first chance.

We all know Overeem was electing to avoid the ground as well.

Volkov had total disregard for Werdum's jiu jitsu it seemed, and even though Werdum was being highly aggressive and looking to pass, Volkov never worried and got himself back to guard multiple times in the first three rounds while also avoiding damage

He got taken down sure. He practically gave him those td. As op said he didn't care for werdums bjj and had amazing composure. He wasn't afraid at all and got back up after and punished werdum.

Majorly impressed is all I can say.

werdum came into the fight out-of-shape and with his poor fight IQ as usual. instead of being reckless on the feet he went the option of being reckless with his TD's and submission attacks which is unusual with his usually technically sound and efficient jiu jitsu game and ground control. it was when werdum realized he was getting too exhausted and that he needed a finish to win in the 4th that he opened up and got reckless with his striking that he got ko'd from the mount by volkov. same old werdum of the past 5 years pretty much

Werdum was quite tired and I was confused as to why he tried to gnp and not advance position. Nice job to Volkov, though. But that takedown defense...

That's fine but he didn't fare well against Kongo and Tony Johnson, and neither of those guys are high-level wrestlers.

And for the record, Travis Browne has survived 8 rounds vs. Werdum without getting submitted. He didn't look very good while surviving, but he still did. So did Hunt before getting KO'd. Werdum's submission game doesn't seem to be what it once was.

Wedum's never been shredded, but he seems fearless, and needless to say, he possesses amazing BJJ. His striking looked beautiful in his run leading up to his championship win.

Lol you act like volkov pulled guard or something. He got taken down against his will.
