Volkanovski vs FW Conor McGregor

They've fought similar opponents in Mendes, Aldo, and Max.
Conor beat them all easier. He beat better versions of Mendes and Aldo, but Volk beat a better version of Max.

Yes Mendes fight was short notice but it was also short notice for Conor as well, whom had been training for a striker in Aldo.

FW Conor is often underestimated, and Volk doesn't really have a huge takedown threat against Conor, who has great TDD at 145

Volk's fight IQ is elite, but didn't he try to outstrike Max instead of taking advantage of his better wrestling skillset?
 
People will say Volk would deeeeztroy Conor, as recency bias is massive in fandom, but I'm not so sure. Conor at FW was undefeated and a b-b-beast. A bad night for Conor at FW was a fight lasting over two minutes. I thought Holloway beat Volk, he has had some long drawn out nail biters, almost subbed multiple times by Ortega, and not sure he could deal with Conor's striking.

It is currently fashionable to hate on Conor, act like Conor post MayMac that shattered his leg was the same Conor that clowned Eddie, but make no mistake, he did not become the only lineal champ-champ because he was lucky or was trash. Dude was amazing at his best and could beat anyone at his size. We will see how Volk deals with trying to become the second lineal male champ-champ ever....then we can talk and get a better idea.

Conor had a relatively easy run at 145, let's be honest.

Ive seen him take down a few guys. That would be his best gameplan against Conor. Maybe you're right I just haven't seen it lately. Don't even remember much of a wrestle heavy plan against KZ.
 
As a fan of Conor I would definitely favor Volk, Conor could catch him but I feel Volks speeds, movement, cardio would just be too much for Conor he would have a very hard time catching him.

Wish I had access to old Sherbro threads. This was the standard response to Conor with ALL his opponents since he got to the UFC.....a decade later and things really have not changed. Many people said Brimage was more athletic, faster, higher level, etc, and that no Irish fighter could ever hope to even crack the top 20. He was fun to doubt for some people, and ironically it was the doubters that were most wrong about him to begin with that are still the ones acting like he was some bum and anyone could beat him.

Just as Khabib was a nightmare match up for Conor, Conor was a nightmare match up for someone like Volk that is a little stumpy kick boxer guy, "Jack of all trades", and is not a great offensive wrestler like Khabib. Mac could just pick him apart on the feet, use traps and angles to corner him and then KO him. Would be a fun fight but Volk very likely gets TKO'd by the end of the second.
 
I gotta be honest, volk is fantastic and the superior fighter, but I have a hard time saying Conor wouldn't find his chin eventually. Being that short and aggressive I see Conor dropping him within the first two rounds. In some sort of trilogy scenario I could see volk winning 2/3 but head to head match up vs prime Conor? Gotta go with McGregor

Easy run? He beat three champs during that time, not to mention the dude that just beat his ass twice.

Prime vs prime , it depends, does Volk have all the fight footage of Conor facing Mendes, Aldo, Diaz, and Poirier?

If so, Volk wins 100%, because Volk would understand Conor’s primary weapon and more importantly, the “Set-up.” Conor starts off strong, throws spinning kicks, teeps, crowds you, then you feel cornered, you throw a hard, committed punch and he flatlines you with a precise left counter. That’s it, that’s his true bread and butter.

Volk can stop that easy and obliterate Conor…

However….

If Volk had no Conor fights to reference, except maybe his first 3 fights in the UFC… Then there is a great chance McNuggets TKO’s the tough, well-rounded Volk, primarily because Conor’s left hand, when not studied or respected, was a dangerous weapon.

I absolutely despise Conor as a human being, but he was pretty special at 145 lbs. It's easy to let hate cloud our judgement, but he is/was a tremendous fighter. He had especially good size and reach at 145. But not more than Max, and Volk has beaten Max 3 times. More power than Max though.
It's also harder to judge a fighter (Volk) who has not yet lost in the UFC and in his prime. He doesn't show a lot of weaknesses. Very well-rounded and very athletic.
Ortega had a near-submission, but I don't see Conor replicating that.
There's also no one of note that Conor beat at 145 that Volk hasn't also beaten. Poirier maybe, but Porier has since proven his superiority over Conor.
It would be a great and intriguing fight, I'm sure. But I would say Volk wins.

Certainly if Volk doesn’t know ANYTHING about Conor, no big fights to review and study, yeah, Conor at least drops him and likely finishes him.

But a trilogy? Volk takes the next two, easy.
 
FW Conor was a machine in the first two rounds, after that is all Volk.

This is very true. Conor early was a buzz saw. He even won the early rounds off Mayweather. It was not until that a game plan became evident how to beat him, which was weathering the storm, gassing him and softening him up. I also still maintain there were two featherweight Conor's: pre and post his injury with Holloway. After he beat Holloway he had the knee issue and admitted he became a head Hunter who wanted to finish early to minimize risk of damage. With the Holloway fight he show cased a very complete and measured game, from kicking to grappling. In the Brandao fight it was evident he changed his style and just wanted to finish quick.....this eventually bit him in the ass vs Diaz where he gassed and got finished, had to again revamp game in the second fight and became more measured again.
