Media Volkanovski locked in as back up fighter for Charles vs. Islam

He just uploaded this. He confirmed that the UFC are on board with it. He also says that this lines him up as the next guy to fight for the LW title even if nobody pulls out.

This is great. I always found it weird that some people on here were genuinely raging at Islam when Javier said Volk would be a good fight after 280.

Beneil has said multiple times for the last month that he is the official backup for the title fight and will make championship weight. So either UFC is doing something shady (definite possibility) or Volk is being lied to. Note he said "UFC is on board" ... that sounds less than official to me. plus with a card coming up in Australia, why would they do Volk's big for a second belt on short notice in Abu Dhabi?

Very weird.
Of course it's shady.
It all depends who drops out and who they want to become champ.
They can keep it vague and decide later.

Do we think Volk's team and the UFC made this official-page promo video for no reason?
It's all hype and brand building.

No Beneil said it in an interview this past week, he's the official backup and will make championship weight.

That's true but if Alex actually comes out to Abu Dhabi and makes weight, UFC / Dana etc will 100% choose him to step in to fight either Islam or Charles over Beneil if it is necessary.

  • In August, Ali lobbied for Dariush to be backup. Source.
  • In September, Dariush told reporters that Ali told him to prepare to be backup. Source. "That’s what [my manager] Ali [Abdelaziz] told me, I was the backup for this,"
  • But the article title says "Beneil Dariush gets backup duties for Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev title tilt". Even though in the article Dariush just says him manager told him to be ready.
And that is how half of sherdog got convinced Dariush was an "official" backup.
  • Also in September, Dana said he is "open" to Volk being backup. Source.
And apparently today Volk says he's backup.

Hopefully we don't find out who is or isn't backup. But damn people, try reading the articles, not just the headlines.

Hypothetically if Oliveira/Islam stays intact, but someone in Beneil/Gamrot pulls out will Volk also step in for that fight?
I know it's not nearly the same type of risk/reward situation as it is for stepping in as a replacement for Oli/Islam and idk if his team would be willing to let him take that fight, however Volk would be probably be game enough to accept it.

Volk vs Gamrot would be amazing to see too.

Alex won't have to cut as much at this weight class, so it definitely makes it easier for him.

Unless Dana told him this, its his own way to hype himself up in the media as the next title contender.

Not calling him a liar, its about getting the media & social media attention to lead the matchmakers to the opportunities you want.

Random thought - Would Volk be willing to take a warm-up fight at 155? Against the winner of Poirier/Chandler?

can we make alex a backup for the dariush and gamrot fight as well just in case?

Sounds like he's only fighting at 155 for a belt. "I'll be at ufc 280 to make weight...I'm there to save the day...if not, at least I'm locked in as the next guy to fight for that lightweight title and that's that."

Yeah that makes sense, I feel like he would be game to take on Beneil or Gamrot is the opportunity presented itself even on short notice.
That being said his team and perhaps the UFC will tell him otherwise since the risk/reward for that one isn't as good compared to stepping in for lightweight title fight against Islam or Oliveira.

Anyways, war Volk.
Dude is a beast and seeing him at lightweight next is getting me hyped.

as long as there's any backup fighter, I'm happy to have an event. Volk, olives, islam, beniel, any of those matchups are nice

Damn, Charles fighting himself confirmed!

A service that is appreciated, but hopefully not needed.

Islam vs Charles has to happen first. Everything else we'll worry about after.

Great to hear that Volk gives us a Super Fight Now or Next. (IF true...)

The Abdelaziz triangle can scheme about injuries and availability later -- as for now, Abdel's prime horse is about to hit the track.

A champion willing to make himself the backup to the weight class aboves title fight short notice is a pretty ballsy thing to be doing. Gotta respect alex for that.
Something Jones would definitely never do.
