Volk jabbed Diego's face off for the majority of the fights, but since he's not fighting recklessly and spamming hooks folks are claiming he was running.
Yeah, would be cool if his opponents didn't know if a haymaker or takedown was coming and they had to guess each time. Guy has all the skills to be champ, but clearly not close to Topuria's level of striking.Could happen. I just think he needs to mix it up more and implement his style rather than relenting to his opponents style and trying to beat them there. Could be a mental obstacle. He a powerful striker, but he's a grappler, why not threaten it? Hopefully he can be trained into changing his mindset.
Yeah I noticed that, after getting hit pretty bad he only tried to get inside 1 or 2x a round. Wish Volk kept doing damage like that but likely he didn't want to get KO'd again so kept to being safe. Was hoping by 5th round Lopes said fuck it and just Ngannou marched throwing haymakers win or lose.To lopes' credit, he was getting rocked in most of the early exchanges. he Probably felt like it would be dangerous if he pressed in those early rounds.
Huge fan of lopes because of his activity and style. I like Volk too, but truth be told he's an older FW who just had his confidence rattled by 2 KO's in a row, if there was any chance of being champ I feel Lopes had it this fight. Maybe he changes up his game and proves me wrong. Not every fighter can be champ and atleast Lopes will put on fun fights at the very least.3 fights is like 12 months for Lopes. He will get back there before Ilia gets a shot at 155, don't stress.
Ilia fought a different version of Volk. He fought a version that didn't hold his ground and throw back.
Lopes did alright, he just trusted too much in the big shot thinking Volks chin was done.
Ilia should have stopped drinking wine in the weightcut week and stayed at 145.
Instead he is sitting in purgatory at 155 with 2-3 more deserving guys ahead of him.

He looked in incredible shape, even compared to Islam the 1st time. Somehow he looked great at his age, maybe best in his career. However I noticed he wasn't as tanky as he usually is, a little bit more worried about being clipped, it's normal after being KO'd 2x after being invincible for the rest of his career prior. The work Volk put in for this fight was on another level.
I follow some of his coaches podcasts etc. Basically he left no stone unturned for this camp, stopped drinking and had a near 100% adherence to his nutrition strategy etc. He did the opposite of what he did in the Islam 2 fight and even Ilia fight where he managed concussion symptoms during the whole 3 month turn around.
Lopes fought an older version sure, but it was more in line with the Volk that arguably beat Islam and lost on a round of back control where he was the one landing shots.
Lopes did well. Volk was just hitting him so hard in rounds 1-3 he couldn't advance like he was in 4-5.
Yeah like most champs he is starting to get figured out. Lopea though was one of the more dangerous match ups for him by being a wild striker and wild sub artist. The other guys at 145 aren't as dangerous or established yet.He looked in incredible shape, even compared to Islam the 1st time. Somehow he looked great at his age, maybe best in his career. After Volk countered Lopes hard in the 1st round, Lopes didn't want that smoke and gave up walking Volk down to look for KO. Lopes was very careful on his blitzes inside after that. Volk is a great fighter with his skillset right now in the division, but you can't help but think it's a matter of time some younger fighter sparks him out with a little more strategy and wider skillset than Lopes brought.
Hey but I hope I'm wrong and Volk becomes the FW Randy Couture and takes out all these young bucks moving up the rankings.
Me too, I feel like he's going to ride until the wheels come off and won't leave until he gets brutally KO'd again. Luckily Evloev is probably next so no threat there. I'm not sure of any established champs (guys with multiple title defenses) come back and get the belt back and defend it again. Actually the only one was Jones, but he didn't really lose the belt by losing and when he did return he wasn't as great as before. Maybe Stipe? But he just put in that 3 year long trilogy with DC so idk.I am hoping he ridea off into the sunset or goes one mpre and retires regardless. He is defibitely coming tp the end of his career.
I don't want this to be the case but I think his career will mirror Izzy's post Pereira win.Me too, I feel like he's going to ride until the wheels come off and won't leave until he gets brutally KO'd again. Sadly, sometimes you just know when someone's time is up. They look like a world beater then lose a couple fights, then can't win again. You have fans who still hope, but father time is undefeated. Sometimes a slight regression is all it takes for guys who they would beat anytime to have the edge and get the win. Not only that Volk is such a big name now you know any opponent is training their ass off like they never have before.I don't want this to be the case but I think his career will mirror Izzy's post Pereira win.
That's my honest opinion.
