Because they needed to be shown how much better life was with less people, so they'd control their population themselves in the future.

If you double the resources then they just keep consuming and multiplying with no regard for scarcity.

How come when Thanos snapped, half the trees didn't dissapear? If we're going with the idea that life is anything that's biologically consuming cosmic energy that the universe needs to survive, that doesn't apply to just human-like creatures.

He targeted "souls" out of revenge. A single star consumes more energy than a planet full of humans by like 400 trillion times. I don't buy we have to kill everyone to make life better.

In the vastness of the universe, there are millions of empty planets. It would be easy to snap a few of them to habitable or tweak a technology to allow certain beings to survive in different environments - like a Tesla underwater dome house.
