(VIDEO) Brabo choke from closed guard

That has to be the most useless technique ever, the guy has to throw a punch in slow motion, keep his arm there and let you manhandle him.

not even close to true. go watch BJ Penn's first fight with Matt Hughes. he used this position (octopus guard) to take Hughes' back an choke him out.

I use this position myself all the time and hit several submissions from here on a regular basis. The darce is one I didn't think up from there, but it looks great, so I'm very excited about this post :)

Was working an 'octopus'-like position today in class with the gi (getting there by breaking and dragging an opponents one-handed double lapel grip), and this technique is definitely an option. I would probably go to the back most of the time if they try a far knee pass, but if they try the near knee pass (leaving me with a leg between theres in a lose half guard), this choke seems to be a legit option.

is that the octopus guard..?

GOD i hate these names..LOL!

How does attempting a brabo from top half guard invite having your back taken? If I read you right, and that's what you mean.

I didn't say half. Easy to misunderstand though.

I think it's a novelty move. Regardless, the brabo/armless brabo from inside another's guard is a move which has produced BMA_Mat results.

Does anyone have a link to a good anaconda choke vid? I've been trying to find one that goes in to a little more detail than the ones I have seen.

ummm.. read trhe uber sticky thread that says "read or die"

This is a pretty sweet technique.

I just can't seem to get this choke working for me in gi. I feel like i force it way too much. For those of you that use this in gi how are your hand grips?

Anyone use this in gi with frequent success?
