Yeah, Luque sort of reached the Top 5 without ever facing a real wrestling threat except for Michael Graves who dominated much of the fight. After that, Luque didn't really fight too many real wrestlers (minus Muhammad who he KO'd before the guy ever attempted a takedown). He fought a few dudes who are generalists and/or strikers that occasionally mix in takedowns... and a lot of the time they had some measure of success when they tried to take him down or control him against the fence: Edwards, Price, Perry, Brown. Chiesa took him down with ease and took his back before getting ahead of himself and getting Darce'd as he always does. Hell, even Geoff Neal was taking him down. The Muhammad rematch goes without saying.
The question is how RDA -- at this stage in his career -- fits into this. I think he's a very credible wrestler who will probably be able to take Luque down at some point. His submission defense is leagues ahead of that of Chiesa. His size may or may not hold him back. His striking is usually pretty solid; I felt like he had lost a step against Felder in some of the stand-up exchanges but he looked surprisingly good against both Moicano and Fiziev throughout both of those fights all things considered. I could see him doing just enough to stay safe on the feet while going tit-for-tat with Luque before finding his takedowns and grinding out a UD... but I can also see Luque picking his shots and KO'ing him after stuffing/reversing a few takedowns.
One of my concerns (other than RDA's general age/wear-and-tear along with him being undersized for 170) is that he occasionally relies too heavily on looping punches -- hooks in particular. He'll occasionally straighten out his shots and had some success with that against Colby for instance, but a lot of the time he likes to pressure his opponent and light them up with looping punches to the head & body. Against Luque, he'll be playing right into the guy's wheelhouse and Vicente has the reach advantage. He would be well-advised to rely on an educated jab and 1-2, keeping his counters straight as Neal did. Luque does not handle punches coming down the center line well at all, probably due to his total lack of head movement. Both are prolific low-kickers and I imagine that will nullify one another. Not sure who has the better durability at this stage. Historically Luque, but who's to say after the damage he's taken? It's not like RDA is known for being KO'd either. No question who hits harder lol.
Leaning RDA, but I could be persuaded otherwise very easily.
