Media Vicente Luque missed weight as a backup fighter

weird because don't you get paid JUST to make weight. you dont even need to be fit or ready to fight just come in at the weight (could be gambling though if you actually did get called in to fight though haha).

was he thinking he was actually going to get called in to fight and thus tried to come in as competitive as possible?

Hopefully no one holds this against the dude. He’s never failed to make weight for one of his actual UFC fights, I tend to think he deserves the benefit of the doubt in this case
He doesn't even look big for the division at all, Chiesa seemed to dwarf him. Really wonder what happened here. maybe he underestimated the weight cut due to it generally being easy for him.

Vincente Luque (#4 WW) was contracted to serve as the backup fighter for UFC 268 in the event either Kamaru Usman or Colby Covington were unable to compete.

Not only did Vincente fail to make championship weight (170) but he was unable on his second try to even make the WW limit; weighing in at 172.2

Not a good look for a fighter eyeing the next WW title shot. He was effectively being paid for the sole purpose of making weight in the event Usman or Covington were unable to compete.
How much notice did he have to cut the weight?

Luque can't win here no matter what he does. If he turned to serve as a backup fighter on short notice here, Sherdoggers would call him a coward. They were already doing that with Leon

They are all losers , ufc shills

This is what the weight classes & cutting standards in MMA lead to.
Many fighters are just too ridiculously heavy for their weight class, and often don't even make weight.

Yes!

I think the real question is whether he gets paid to miss weight, though.
He should still get paid something.

If Colby or Usman pulled out, they could still save the card with a non-title fight involving Luque. That's at least half the reason they have a backup, just to make sure the fight happens at all.

Easy answer. Short notice and he didn't take the weight cut as serious & eased off the last few days knowing that Colby vs Usman was going to happen without any hitch

Yeah, it was mostly a cheeky question.

What're the odds the UFC cheaps out and fines him 20%? (see ^ response)

Does he have to pay Usman and Covington 20% each of his backup purse, LOL?!

I understand it's hard to find the motivation to kill yourself making weight if you know you're not going to fight, but that's what he signed up for. It's not a good look.

Damn why is everyone shitting on Luque? Dude agreed to be the back up fighter on pretty short notice.

I wasn't even sure if he was being paid at all lol
They usually give them something like half of an appearance fee. They’ve done it quite a few times and they usually make some money just to make weight. After all, they’re supposed to be in fighting shape, on diet; etc…

So if you’re like 50k/50k normally, you’d get 25k to get on the scale and make weight

It will never happen, but would be amazing if the UFC just did same day weigh ins…

enough of the cutting your life to squeeze into a smaller division. Lame
Colby and Usman should get 20% of his purse, on principle
