The short answer is that you can't. The US got a very strong currency but if you start doing stuff like that people will end up switching to the Euro.

Your numbers are way off, and the question doesn't really scan. U.S. debt is the safest investment humans have devised. If we decided (for no good reason) to change that, we'd throw our whole system into chaos. I know you might like that in theory, but non-sociopaths would be concerned about the resulting human suffering.

Stupid right-wingers have jumped from "technically, it's possible for rates to be so high that cutting them actually generates more revenue," (which is true) to "tax cuts for rich people pay for themselves in extra revenue," which is false by a huge margin. Now stupid left-wingers are jumping from, "technically, we could print money to pay off debt; our only real constraint is inflation," (which is true) to "debt can never be a problem." I think it's really important for responsible people to prevent the stupid left view from being institutionalized on the left the way the stupid right view has become institutionalized.

I am pissed off that our choices were bail them out, or crash the world economy. That needs to change, but it has gotten worse.

I absolutely agree that if it was possible to let them fail, without crashing the world economy, that we should. We have to break up the banks so that next time, and there will be a next time, that we can let them fail.

Also take into account the 1977 NYC blackout, while most people were looting clothes, food, tv's some young kids instead were looting turntables. These kids who now had these turntable began to practice with these turntables styles and methods that already existed but also began to develop their own styles, their own methods which was lead to huge advances in the development of Hip Hop.
