Vertical jump survey

T NATION | The Four Types of Movements

An excerpt:
"I should point out something about strength and the power of unloaded movements, so let's use punching as a specific example.

As a powerlifter, as much as it pains me to say, there's generally no correlation between maximal strength as represented by one's 1RM in the gym and unloaded power generation (punching power)"

I'm not sure how well researched this is, but I believe this to be the case as well.
My sparring partners, opponents, and coaches agree with me as well.

yeah I don't think it is well-researched, to me a standing vertical or broad jump is more of a pure power motor movement, but I'd love to see any credible (or otherwise) studies on maximal str. and punching power correlation, technique/RFD/efficiency is going to be a factor regardless hard to exclude or factor them in, damn confounding variables. Speculation at this point?

Tosa,you should add a BF% question.

A guy who is 185lbs,7% Bf is probably going to have a bigger vert than someone who has the same weight but 14% bf.(if they have the same strength level).

First of all, I'm not adding a question at this point. Second, it would be unreasonable to expect people to be able to give an accurate measurement of bodyfat.

Third, if peak force and rate of force production are the same for individuals with the same mass, they will have the same vertical (ignoring things like technique, leverages, etc). Regardless of bodyfat. It's just physics.

Fourth, even if body composition were a factor, it's not necessary to know what people's bodyfat is to measure the influence of other factors.

I forgot to say it doesn't have to be accurate, you could say around 10% etc.
I also said probably,not definitely.
Ok,it was just a thought and for fun,but I understand what you are saying.

1. ~23"

2. 6' 188lbs

3. 205, BUT I haven't maxed. With 1rm sheet i should be able to do 250. (greatest was 205x8)

4.A) yes
B) I'm doing original SS... so Cleans?
C) 130, but I did 3x5 last night and could do more, guessing 175?
D) very very half assed did cleans, have sometimes done the PL's: squat/DL for the last 3 years.
E) (Shitty-passable-fair-good)

5. nope

6. How naturally explosive/powerful do you believe yourself to be? (Below average - Average - Above average)

-side note: on a "run up" jump i can go way higher(~30"), if you're curious about that sort of thing.

Bump to see if there are any more responses.
