Valentina basically saying Grasso won by luck

No she didn't. She was very accurate about how MMA works, and it's the fans who don't think fortunate timing or events play into MMA at all that are fucking crazy. You are all so pent up about not ever saying "fluke" that you can't ever say that any luck or gamble ever happened, even when fighters use those words all the time.

No, in the pure chaos that is an actual fight, every single bit of success was planned and drilled to that specific intention. You're all so very smart.

Alexa earned the win. Valentina acknowledged that. It only takes a moment to win, and Alexa snatched it.

No she wasn't. Lay and pray tactics don't score points like they used to. Grasso was handling her in the striking every round. I had Grasso up 3 rounds going into the 4th which she was also winning before the sub.

Then you're delusional. Lay and pray may not score points like it used to, but when the striking is even for the first half of a round and then one fighter spends the second half of the round on top of the other, you'd better believe the round is being scored for the one on top.

She said something like “you can be winning every aspect of the fight and one wrong thing can lose you the fight.”

Not sure she was winning every aspect of that fight…. Seemed to be getting pieced up on the feet and had to wrestle to get the win.
Its her saltyness on top of language barrier but she always sounds like a sore loser in defeat, this fight wasnt a blowout and she lost 1 second that cost her the fight, it was competitive.

She’s not lying.

Grasso is a terrible grappler, and Valentina is just as goofy for throwing that ridiculous kick.

This might be the weakest stable of champs in UFC history.
If you the kind of noob that takes wmma seriously, sure I guess.

Clearly couldn't handle Grasso on the feet.

Getting to someone's back while standing does not automatically translate to submission finish. People are really not giving Alexa enough credit for how skillfully and quickly she put one of the best female grapplers in that dangerous position.

Valya is probably upset and it's a tough pill to swallow. Grasso was better across the board.

Grasso doesn't have good takedown defense, but she isn't a terrible grappler.

Valentina is an arrogant person. She got what she deserved.
This will humble her.
I must confess that as good as she is, fighting wise, I never really liked her character (she was never my friend). That arrogance you talked about is probably what made her do those spinning kicks, basically giving her back for free, dismissing Alexa's skills, while Val was probably going to win the decision ; although Grasso did good with her fists, she had some trouble with distance management. You could see on Val's face she ate a few good ones though.
The way she jumped on Val's back, locked the hooks and choked her, was so slick.

On paper, Shevchenko was better in about every field, experience included ; Grasso never gave up though, and did THE exact, perfect move, at the perfect moment, to achieve victory.
Cute, and smart. She's got a chin too.

Fiorot said she wanted to wait before fighting Shevchenko, and now there's Alexa, with a probable rematch (ugh), there's Erin...
It's not looking good for Manon IMO, she's not getting younger too.
But in all honesty, I'm so glad for Grasso, it kinda eases my disappointment from the main event.

When you win 4 rounds straight and then get caught in a submission, yeah... there's some luck.

Valentina looked a bit slower though. She didn't look prime.

Its not really arrogance. Shes given up her back multiple times that way. I think her main issue is that her fight creativity is waning. How many times is she going to use those spinning kicks and the crucifix, she breaks them out every fight and opponents have specifically gameplanned for them. How about trying something new ?

This is absolutely true that's why this sport is so interesting, you can be winning the whole fight one mistake can end the fight in so many different ways this is not the first and wont be the last.
I'm sorry to digress, but I just wanted to react to your post ; I think that the same fact is (among other facts) what's making football (soccer) so popular : a BIG underdog on paper can still snatch a victory ; the better team doesn't always win, because one goal is all it takes to snatch a victory, and heart can compensate a lot of things.
For example, I don't know shit in basketball, but it seems that with those big scores, because of the very essence of the game, it's very hard for a clearly inferior team to steal a victory.

That uncertainty is, for a good part, what's making people watch those sports IMO, and it makes sense to like MMA as a football fan : that thrill when a BIG upset happens is an awesome feeling.

People are probably right about Erin destroying her now.
I hope blanchfeld wins. Her boring ass style and meh looks will bury the division again. Grasso is the only one with the potential to bring light to the division.

You're right, in that the way she's fighting may not be arrogance, it's probably just the way she's used to fight. You're also right that she's also became very predictable ; she could win despite that fact before, we can now see that she might have to reinvent herself indeed.

Her out of the cage behaviour though, I'm not a fan of, but that's a matter of taste. Let's be clear, compared to a Conor or a Jones (just the most obvious examples), she's a saint, and I've got nothing serious to blame her for. But I'm under the impression her confidence can make her a bit contemptuous, although it's probably a common side effect of being such a good fighter.
I know it's not a reality show, but a fighting org ; I just can't pretend I'm blind to the fighter's characters, especially when a girl like Grasso is just next to her.

I was rooting for Grasso and think Val has gotten somewhat arrogant but she didnt say it was luck. She was pretty spot on in describing what happened.
Grasso looked great in round 1 but Val was winning handily on the cards once she started to use her wrestling. Against most, Val might have gotten away with it but Alexa deserves all the credit in the world for taking advantage of Val's mistake.

Well Val all it takes for you is to throw a lazy back kick when your tired and she capitalised on it. Your own fault.
