Law Utah Senator changes consent law after relative gets charged for having sex with a minor:

It might surprise some of you, but in many states, the age of consent is only 16. So long as the adult having sex with a 16 year old doesn’t have any authority over her/him, then it’s legal as gross as that is.

It's not really all that much grosser than a 19 year old and a 49 year old doing it, is it? No matter which one is which gender?

I understand why we have to have an age of consent; you've got to put a number on it so you can have concrete legislation regarding it. It's the same reason we have minimum ages to get a job, to drink alcohol, and so on. But people don't magically become mature exactly 18 years from the day they were born. Heck, there are people in their 30s who probably shouldn't be anywhere near the other gender. But the law says they're allowed.

I certainly don't have any desire to get with a teenager; if I had my way, we'd raise the age of consent, because people these days seem to mature more slowly than they ever have. But I'm also not about feign shock and disgust just because someone who was older than an arbitrary age had consensual sex with someone who was younger than an arbitrary age.

Same as Europe and Australia, actually it’s almost the entire planet

Age of consent laws seem to be universally fucked up for some strange reason...
Yeah it’s weird. I remember going to Australia back in 2000ish and people saying the age of consent here is 14. Uh….ok? Shouldn’t you be looking for 20ish?

Scanning thread for @Croo67 who usually gets angry with religious-based child sex crimes.... struggling to spot him...

I suspect we feel that way because most of us know someone twice that old (32) who still lives with their parents. Those laws are likely from a time when 16 year olds were actually mature and capable of making decisions on their own.

When they're low they're almost always low because the creepy old men who either try to, or do want to bang teenagers made them low. Then they're raised by people who have more sense, and then another wave of creepy old men (and sometimes not so old men) comes along and tries to argue them back lower again. And most of the argument comes in the form of suggesting a girl is in her sexual prime as a teenager and most viable for child-bearing. Same people who argue this hated abortion rights, don't think spousal rape was a thing, had a legal climate with very vague definitions of spousal abuse (if a woman's husband slapped her around, perhaps she shouldn't misbehave), made divorce incredibly difficult legally. All ideas surrounding the supposed "purpose" of women, general sexual and social submissiveness to men. 2nd class citizenship

I was out on my own at 16. An apartment was $342 per month in Virginia. A little less than that if you didnt mind the ghetto. Right now? Same City is $1,310

Yeah, I would raise the age of consent. We had an officer years ago that got into trouble and ended up in prison after he had a fling with a sixteen year old daughter of a prominent attorney. The only issue was that he was a school resource officer at her school and that is what hemmed him up. He was a fucking creep, but I owe him my position as a lieutenant because it was his slot I filled after he was fired.

What I'm saying is, there are people who believe that "consent" isnt even a real thing. Most of them are religious zealots.

No, that’s not true.

Most of them are right here on Sherdog.

You know the type - those conservatives who clutch their pearls over "biological reality" every time gender comes up. You've seen them in every trans/gender thread - obsessing over chromosomes and genitalia, ranting that psychology means nothing and biology is destiny.

If all that matters is biology, if the only thing that defines a person is what’s between their legs, then this is why you have some of them questioning age of consent. Puberty hits at 12 or 13. Gonads are working. Biologically, that's sexual maturity, right?

You’re a sick and disgusting person. Seriously what is wrong with you? No one gets tricked by a 13 year old. Stop trying to mitigate abhorrent behavior.

He's telling you who he is and likely what hes down with.

I suspect I can guess which political leader he unwaveringly supports based on this.

Half of all rock songs (songs in general) were about teenage girls. Just saying

There certainly seems to be an obsession with seventeen year olds, at least. Dancing Queen, I Love Rock 'n' Roll, Edge of Seventeen...and those are just the ones that occur to me without actually having to think about it.
