That's true...but I think I read that USA government rewards gold medal winning athletes with $50k. Its a lot less than other countries (Singapore gives a $1 million reward for a gold) but my point was that UK gold medallists get $0 from government.

While they get reward money (25K for gold, 15K for silver, 10K for bronze) they also get taxed on it unfortunately; so if you normally pay low level or no income taxes you may be shunted into a new tax bracket just by doing well in the Olympics in those few weeks out of a year, and so you pay out more to the government.
