Economy US to take 10% equity stake in Intel; more to follow

Should the US government be acquiring shares of private companies

Intel is not much of a blue chip stock now as you would think. This seems more of a bail out, and the US government making sure they have a reliant supplier of chips for drones and other military equipment. It's a measured step in the tech war against the CCP.

Nope.

When they took a stake it Citigroup in 2008, no taxes on any dividends they received. And any realized gains from the stock sale aren't taxed either.

They invested, iirc, like $45 billion into Citigroup and made close to $15 billion off of it. But then lost $11 billion with GM.

But the main goal is to stabilize a critical industry, not make a profit trading stocks. Or at least it was in 2008.
Can you in a very simple manner explain what happens with those stocks and 10% when the government switches from him to Dems again?

Oh FFS, lol.

What's supposed to happen is the stocks are held by Treasury Dept on behalf of all U.S. taxpayers. So it's ours.

An administration change shouldn't change anything. Bush was POTUS when the government started buying Citigroup. Obama bought some more, then sold it.

Privatize is all! This is where we are.

Americans are getting F'd in the A so hard. Ground fucking beef is $6.99lb. I got a sale on some chuck for $5.99lb and trimmed it nice, cut it up and made a stew. 10 years ago you could get chuck for $2.99.

This may derail a bit, but I was watching a street food video yesterday from Pakistan. The lady running it scooted up on a nice electric full-size scooter. I had to look up the model and all that. It has a range of 120km and a top speed of around 30MPH. It cost the equivalent of $600 American. That would cost $2000 easy here. We are overpaying for everything. Drugs, meat, insurance, fucking scooters.

They will charge what we are willing to pay. We have a whole generation that thinks spending $50 to get some Big Mac's delivered makes sense. Rant over.
I'm making some Mongolian beef tomorrow and I am looking forward to it! Has nothing to do with anything other than beef is expensive but God damn is this gonna taste good!

Is there a game plan here or are we just investing 10 billion to motivate other investors into buying in?

Intel is horribly managed and have been trying to catch up for years now. They will need more than 10 billion and a US government backed confidence booster pack to get the ball rolling

Still owned by the government, and would be up to whatever is the current administration to decide to sell or not, assuming there isn't any fine print.

The money was already spent or funded, it's more of a signal to the market that the US will back Intel and wants tech companies to pony up funding for Intel.

MAGA behave like a bunch of Bolshevik vandals, so why not embrace it?

Christ, what a shit show.

I feel like a lot of people ITT need a primer on what state-owned enterprises are and especially how common they are. I suggest this great article from the IMF:

Yes, lots of bad guys from "3rd World Shitholes" like Gazprom (Russia), Petrobras (Brazil), and China Petrochemical.

But also a lot of good guys from developed democracies like Peugeot (France), DHL (Germany), and Volkswagen.

Having said that, Intel probably doesn't qualify as state owned because the gov't doesn't have board representation and probably very little say in their operations. From Intel themselves:

The government’s investment in Intel will be a passive ownership, with no Board representation or other governance or information rights. The government also agrees to vote with the Company’s Board of Directors on matters requiring shareholder approval, with limited exceptions.

Most people in here who trend left arent going to chastise this practice as non-viable. We are going to chastise blatant hypocrisy by the "free market" muppets who would have screamed bloody murder if a Democrat had done this.

The entire Tea Party movement started because of a bailout.
