Update On Walmart Effing up the wife's car

Well, in this case the only thing wrong was the head gasket and the rings. The work was all done at a Subaru dealership and their work is warrantied. I would be more suspicious if was not a Subaru dealer due to boxer engines being different.
I hope so, good luck.

Gotta be honest, you made out there. Good deal.

Eh maybe. The whole stress/headache of dealing with all this would not be worth it to me. I guess it would depend on OP and how stressful/time consuming the whole process was. I personally hate having to do anything extra like this because my free time is limited and I don't want it wasted doing this kind of stuff.

It was a pain in the ass. Would not want to do it again. However, at least the car should be better than it was before Walmart go it.

Lesson learned, change your own oil, it’s a man thing. Glad you got a fresh engine out of the deal and a little scratch on the side.

I used to do it myself but the places you can take your oil to drop it off at were always full so I just stopped doing it.

Nice, I figured that would happen. The car broke down immediately after leaving Walmart and you had a paper trail of the stuff that was damaged from the dealership looking at it. So you had strong evidence that Walmart was responsible, and if they hadn't paid willingly the insurance company would have forced them to.

Rebuilt boxer engine? Id be selling that quickly before it explodes…

Well the wife is smart enough to know something is wrong. She went out to go start the car to go home and it was billowing smoke right away. She got out and went right back in and called for the manager. The manager talked to the tech, looked at the car, and looked at the video from the service bay so he knew what happened right away. The key here is that she didn't drive it like that and all of the tech's mistakes were on camera. I have heard of other cases where people had the same thing happen but they drove their car around like that or there wasn't any proof on video of what was done and those claims were not paid. Have to give the manager at Walmart credit, he took full responsibility right away for the issue. They have an insurance company that covers them for these sorts of problems. The manager made it clear that it was their fault and it should be 100% paid for.
Check your state to see if they have guidelines for diminishment of value. Might be able to get a little on top

Fuck this is confusing.

First you say never take the car to walmart for an oil change bc obviously ko one would ever be that dumb.

Now the update is take it to walmart to get the engine rebuilt and profit?

You gotta bang your wife on the bonnet of your old ass Subaru now. Reclaim the space

Wife brought the car to Walmart for an oil change. They instead drained transmission fluid and added double the oil.

Well, in the end the head blew and the rings were busted. However, Walmart did pay to have it fixed. Transmission was fine as it was driven less than a block.

Subaru dealer basically rebuilt the engine. New head gasket, machined the head, replaced rings, cleaned out the carbon buildup inside the engine, honed the cylinders, removed and inspected the rods and bearings...ect. $6500 in service on the engine but it's basically like new. They replaced a few other things on it too.

But Walmart did cut the check for all of it, to their credit. All in all Walmart paid $2000 for a rental, $6500 for the repair, and $2000 for aggravation.

So the engine is probably actually in better shape now that it was before as it had 75k miles on it and now it's basically rebuilt.

Just in case anyone was curious how this turned out.
I love my Subaru dealership. Everytime i take mine in they fix a whole bunch of shit that doesnt seem to be broken. Im 99% sure the dealership is just scamming the warranty. They put in an entirely new exhaust system when my O2 sensor went out for example.

Should have got them to replace your oil pan seal, oil pump and timing chain / belt parts while they were at it

Pain in the ass but god blessed you with a new engine.

In this case I don't think they were stacking stuff on. The head gasket was definitely blown by the symptoms. There was oil pushed past the rings and in the cylinders too so that indicates the rings were blown too. So if you have to replace the rings you have to hone the cylinders and if you do that it's best practice to clean the carbon out too. But with it being a boxer engine it's probably best to have a Subaru dealership do the work.
