A few years ago, a lot of people where saying 2015 was going to be a big year for blockbuster movies and 2015 was going to break box office records. While doing the 2015 Movie Guide last year, I noticed that 2016 had an even more impressive line-up compared to 2015 in terms of high-profile films. The following are arguably the top 20 biggest films coming out in 2016:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25, 2016)
Arguably the biggest and most anticipated film of 2016 by the public, BvS marks the historic meeting of two of the most iconic characters for the first time on the big screen. To top it off, Wonder Woman is set to make her feature film debut here. Plus, Aquaman and Cyborg will make a brief appearance as well.
Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016)
If there's one 2016 superhero film that could possibly eclipse BvS, it's Captain America: Civil War. Boasting a who's who of superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a new government mandate fractures the Avengers into two warring factions. The new Spider-Man is also expected to make his MCU debut in the film.
X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27, 2016)
While First Class revived the franchise and Days of Future Past gave the series a clean slate, X-Men: Apocalypse is going to be the biggest X-film yet with promises of an extinction-level event. The setting is the 80s and the team gets some new recruits in the form of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler and Jubilee. Oscar Isaac is set to play the popular villain Apocalypse.
Warcraft (June 10, 2016)
The film portrays the origin story of the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs, with an emphasis upon both the Alliance's and the Horde's sides of their conflict. Featuring characters such as Durotan and Lothar, the film will take place in a variety of locations established in the video game series. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, The Source Code).
Independence Day 2 (June 24, 2016)
Set 15 years after the events of the first film, mankind has harnessed the leftover alien tech and built an immense defense program to protect the planet. The next wave of alien invaders has arrived, and a new generation of fighters is called upon to defend the planet. Most of the key original actors are coming back, except for Will Smith.
Star Trek Beyond (July 28, 2016)
Co-writer Simon Pegg says to expect a more exploration-focused, less Earth-centric storyline for Star Trek Beyond. No plot details available yet. Idris Elba (Pacific Rim) is set to play the villain. Kingsman: The Secret Service standout Sofia Boutella lands female lead role.
Ghostbusters (July 22, 2016)
Ghostbusters 3 struggled to get off the ground for decades but it wasn't until writer-director Paul Feig's pitch for an all-female cast reboot that the film was finally greenlit. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones comprise the new team. 96% of Sherdog thinks this movie is going to suck. I think this has potential especially due to Feig, whose last three films (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy) I enjoyed.
The Bourne Betrayal (July 29, 2016)
After the lackluster outing of Jeremy Renner's The Bourne Legacy, fans were thrilled to find out that Matt Damon is returning to play Jason Bourne for the fourth time and with Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass. No plot details are available yet.
Suicide Squad (August 5, 2016)
This little-known comic book property has been getting some serious buzz and media coverage thanks to the incredible cast assembled as well as Jared Leto's version of the Joker. Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, and Viola Davis star and David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) directs.
Gambit (October 7, 2016)
It all started back in 2013 when Channing Tatum said in an interview that he would love to play Gambit because the character is his favorite and he is from New Orleans also. X-Men producer Lauren Schuler Donner talked to the Magic Mike star and greenlit the film. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was recently announced as the director.
Doctor Strange (November 4, 2016)
Doctor Strange will bring magic and wizardry to the mostly tech or cosmic-based Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a casting made in heaven, Benedict Cumberbatch will play the Sorcerer Supreme. Tilda Swinton is set to play Strange's mentor, the Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be the main villain, Baron Mordo. Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil) is directing.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (November 18, 2016)
A Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films and will direct Fantastic Beasts. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut on the trilogy.
The Huntsman (April 22, 2016)
Charlize Theron is returning as Queen Ravenna, and she'll be joined by new additions Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt as the film's villain. The sequel expands the universe established in the first film to reveal how the fates of Eric the Huntsman (Hemsworth) and Ravenna (Theron) intersected before they met Snow White (Stewart). Cedric Nicolas-Troyan will direct from a script by Frank Darabont. First film was just meh to me.
Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27, 2016)
Another meh first movie but it made a boatload of money ($1.025 billion worldwide). Johnny Depp returns as the Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Helena Bonham Carter would reprise her role as the Red Queen. Sacha Baron Cohen joins the cast to play the villain, Time and Rhys Ifans will play Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter's father. James Bobin (The Muppets) is directing.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half Shell (June 3, 2016)
The TMNT sequel is stacked as fan-favorites Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE's Sheamus) are set to finally appear. Tyler Perry is set to play evil scientist Baxter Stockman. Brian Tee (Tokyo Drift) is the new Shredder. David Green (Earth to Echo) is directing.
Kung Fu Panda 3 (January 29, 2016)
Po reunites with his biological father and returns to his birthplace - a secret panda paradise, where he does not fit in. When an evil spirit called Kai terrorizes across China, Po must learn to train a village of clumsy, fun-loving pandas to become the band of Kung Fu Pandas. The original voice cast returns along with newcomers Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons and Rebel Wilson.
Finding Dory (June 17, 2016)
The Finding Nemo sequel takes place six months after the first movie, and Dory, now living in the same reef as the clown fishes, living a normal and quiet life, dealing with her forgetfulness. One day, while at school on the Coral Reef with Nemo, Dory suddenly recalls her childhood memories. The film will be mostly set at the California Marine Biology Institute, a huge complex of sea life rehabilitation and aquarium, where Dory was born and raised.
Deadpool (February 12, 2016)
It took a savvy "leak" of the test footage and Ryan Reynold's last few films bombing to finally get the Deadpool movie greenlit. The film tells the origin story of Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to an experiment which leaves him with new abilities, hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano, and T.J. Miller also star.
Assassin's Creed (December 21, 2016)
The setting of the film is said to be in the Spanish Inquisition, with Michael Fassbender playing a Spanish Assassin named Aguilar de Agarorobo, as well as his modern day descendant - a convicted felon named Michael Lynch - who is being used by the Templars to further their cause in their war against the Assassins. Fassbender reunites with his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel and co-star Marion Cotillard.
Star Wars: Rogue One (December 16, 2016)
The first Star Wars anthology film revolves around rogue band of resistance fighters uniting for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monster) is directing. The cast so far includes Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Sam Claflin, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker.
