unpopular opinion: Poirier is vastly overrated

I can see where TS is coming from .....Although blocking punches with his face against Max is a ridiculous claim ......I’m a Dustin fan .....But I think Conor or Gaethje both win rematches against him ........I’d say slightly overrated maybe ....certainly not massively overrated...if overrated at all

So because Khabib is so good, everybody else sucks?

Gotcha.

No, it's because much like Tony Ferguson...

Dustin Porier also beat a ton of weaker level competition to have a nice streak and then had some actually nice wins but in context weren't amazing. Since I have some time real quick, this is his extensive LW career:

Carlos Diego Ferreira (2015) - 2-1 in UFC, coming off loss to Dariush. Porier KO's him in the 1st round for his LW debut.

Yancy Medeiros - 3-2 in UFC (I'm giving him the win that was a Marijuana positive test DQ). Yves Edwards his best win, beat two bums. 1st round KO Porier

Joe Duffy - 2-0 in UFC prior to the fight, beat two bums. Obviously we know he's not good. Decision.

Bobby Green - 4-1 in UFC prior, coming off loss to Barboza. Lost next fight after. Porier KO 1st round.

Michael Johnson - KOs Porier, his first LW loss.

Then a Majority decision over an older Jim Miller, NC Alvarez after a downed knee, washed Pettis, Gaethje (aggro tard version), Alvarez KO, FW Holloway, Loss to Khabib, 5 round war with Hooker clear decision win 3-2.

So his best wins are: Gaethje, Alvarez, Hooker, Holloway. By far those are his best wins. And you can argue Alvarez and Gaethje weren't in great forms at all, Holloway was a 145er, and the Hangman fight was close. Khabib destroyed him. At least for Gaethje, he was coming off a near KO loss to Johnson and a KO loss to Alvarez prior to the Porier fight. So...not the same guy really as he is now arguably.

So It's not like Porier sucks. He's very clearly a top 10 LW, he's clearly a top 5 LW in the division. But I think him being ranked 2nd right now on Sherdog for example over Gaethje and 2nd (3rd really) by the UFC is a bit flimsy. I just don't think he's that good. We'll see though if he beats McGregor then he proves he is.

It's just like, he didn't beat a stud wrestler Mendes, he didn't KO a GOAT tier fighter like Aldo, he didn't embarrass a better champion version Alvarez. I know I'm comparing to McGregor here, but that's the point right? McGregor's secondary wins include the apt KO over Porier in 1 round. What are Porier's secondary wins, Bobby Green and washed up versions of Pettis and Jim Miller? It doesn't compare.

Had his TS and lost. Im thinking thats his cielling. Favorable Circumstances have certainly helped his career, but coming back from the Conrad ko will always put him in positive light in my eyes.

This is a bad opinion

DP's first fight was against top contender and a guy that was supposed to fight Aldo for the title. You remember Josh Grispi?

Poirier should've gotten an immediate titleshot when he beat him!

Here is a time capsule for you :D

Poirier is 10-2 (1 NC) at LW. Only losses he has at LW are against MJ and Khabib.

He has more top tens in this current top 15 than conrat, Ferg and justin.

He beat:
- #1 justin
- #4 Hooker
- #8 CDF

That CDF win has aged beautifully

Dustin has beat 4 World Champions
- Pettis former UFC LW champion
- Alvarez former UFC LW champion
- Gaethje former WSOF LW champion
- Holloway at the time the current FW Champion and top 5 p4p fighter

He was beating alvarez ass before the illegal move. And he finished him in the second fight.

He made Pettis quit before Tony did

He beat justin infront of his home town crowd

He ended Max Holloway 13 fight win streak and forever changed the way Holloway now fights

He beat a kickboxer from a great gym like ckb.

He's ranked second in the most stacked division in the History of the UFC!
This division has all top 5 fighters ranked in the p4p top 15
- Khabib
- Poirier
- justin
- Conrat
- Ferguson

No other division has this much fighters ranked in the p4p top 15.

Fucking 1/3 of the p4p rankings is occupied by 155ers lol

PUT SOME #RESPEKT ON 155 AND DUSTIN POIRIER

Carlos Diego Ferreira was not a contender at the time. It is you who is revising history and being deceitful here.

As I posted CDF was 2-1 in the UFC coming off a loss to Dariush prior to the Porier fight. He had no significant wins, he was not ranked.

It doesn't really fucking matter what he 3-5 years later does it? And if you want that to be the case, then McGregor beating Holloway on a torn ACL at 145 is one of the best wins in UFC history.

Chill out cupcake. I only said the win aged good :D

What happened in both of the Poirier vs Alvarez fights? I’m a huge Alvarez fanboy and just remember Dusting getting lucky both times particularly in the 2nd fight with the stand up

Poirer has a few well defined weaknesses against elite fighters (lack of elite TDD, struggles against guys with noticeable speed advantage) but I don't think he's overrated; he's dangerous everywhere, good at everything, great cardio, high fight IQ, etc.

The only knock on him is that he doesn't have one elite skill to fall back on but he's definitely top 5 in the division. I don't see anyone calling him GOAT or anything, not sure who TS thinks is "overrating" him.

Poirer is good everywhere and great at nothing.

Very solidly top 10 and can compete in the top 5, but he's not really the #2 guy in the division if we could magically have everyone fight each other.

Khabib mauled him worse then most of his peers and we're all going to remember Johnson and Conor casually knocking him out in the first round. All around he's a skilled, fun fighter, just shy of the best.

I am not askin for your opinion just telling you that he's overrated. Shercucks are gonna make a lot of "DP was never that good" Threads after his next L anyway.

First of all: Dustin is p4p one of the best humans in the UFC and all of his fights are fun to watch and he always delivers.

That said; he's overrated af. A technical brawler with superhuman durability. He struggled against one dimensional (overrated) Hooker. Won bc Gaethje was feeling too comfortable and became overly confident and cocky. Got a controversial win over Alvarez. He used his face to block punches for five rounds against (in LW debuting and bloated) Max and got mauled by Khabib.

Yeah that sounds all like "he was W until he L" but nothing more than facts if you're paying close attention

The LW Division is not stacked. The overall skill level is low and Dustin and the rest of the Top 10 are at least 2 levels below Khabibullah.
So the Dustin was never that good threads start 3 months before fighting Conor

Fascinating
