Underutilized technique in MMA/grappling...

I think foot sweeps are highly under utilized in MMA. You got a guy up against the cage pounding him, it's really low risk and will probably at least cause him to drop his hands. Jon Jones is the only guy I see really using any kind of foot technique when up against the cage.

Rousey's O Goshi - Kouchi Gari combo?
Hettes showed some good ones against Phan.
DHK has a good Kouchi Gari of the cage as well.

Sonnen, Jones, Couture and Fitch have a good Ouchi Gari.

QFT, I think it's safe to say that a lot of "MMA" gyms don't have a dominant judo program and most of the bjj classes will mostly focus on wrestling style takedowns. It's a shame because like you said it's very low risk and high reward.

Wasn't up against the cage, but IIRC Akiyama had some nice trips and sweeps against shields when I saw that fight.

any time I get a single, I usually switch to this instead of finishing a regular single because I feel like I have such control over their hips with this

I train and compete mostly with the gi and this type of takedown always transitions seamlessly from spider guard with they try to back away from it

I also use this type of sweep/takedown when I am in sitting guard. I control a sleeve of theirs and pass it to my hand that is around their leg. I finish the single like this after I sit up. I think Rafa Mendes just showed something like this and ending it with a leg drag pass

I really liked that variation. Haven't been exposed to it before, and will definitely try it out on technique night.

Jones took community college judo specifically to brush up on foot sweeps, and Jon Fitch's coach is DAVE CAMARILLO. I'm pretty sure he's heard the japanese terminology at some point

I find that the head and arm defense is under used in MMA......

Footstomps against the cage. They were prevalent a few years ago and seemed to have dropped off (to me at least)

Edit: Realized this is the grappling forum. Leaving up my contribution tho.
