Underrated/Overrated Films

Sure will.

What other movies do you think are Overrated/Underrated?

A lesser-known, but good crime drama is Eastern Promises. Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts in a film about the Russian mafia and the orphaned baby of a dead prostitute. Really touching story, great character development, brutally violent, with a surprising twist and an ending that raises questions.

I saw that movie. I think it has become somewhat forgotten with time. To be honest I saw the twist coming. How? Because the trailers made such a big deal about a twist that I started to anticipate it. Honestly if there's twist in a movie, I rather know about it at all because then it catches me off guard.

I never saw it in theaters, saw it years after the fact so I was unaware there would be a twist. That's disappointing that they would market it like that. The story was intriguing enough on its own.

That kind of reminds me of the marketing for Terminator Genisys. Revealing that John Connor was the new Terminator was the stupidest fucking thing they could have done. Would have really made for a shock in the theater if they left that as a surprise. But even that wouldn't have saved that train wreck.

Have you seen "The Road," also with Viggo Mortensen?

Terminator marketing team are a bunch of retards. They made the same mistake with Salvation. Like you said Genesys was doomed either way.

I have seen The Road, I loved it.

Overrated:
Star Wars (gets too much credit just because its one of the first sci-fi movie)
Most superhero movies including Avengers and all other marvel hero movies

Underrated:
Most Lars Von Trier movies
The Game
The Hurricane
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (fantastic acting from DiCaprio and enjoyable to watch)
Force Majeure

Just my 2 cents

Two of my other favorites are "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive" by David Lynch. I don't normally tell people about these movies because Lynch's are so bizarre and often require multiple viewings to be able to appreciate the genius.

Lost Highway is a little more accessible, with a story that's a little more straightforward. Bill Pullman is in it, along with Patricia Arquette in arguably her sexiest role ever.

I hated Mulholland Drive the first time I watched it. Had no clue what the fuck was going on, then I stumbled across a website that analyzed all the little details of the movie and explained how everything tied together. Watched it a few more times and now I can appreciate the genius behind it.

Come to think of it, both these movies also deal with the disconnect between reality and altered reality. Characters not liking the reality they live in, so they create a new reality in which to inhabit.

If you like those kind of movies, I can recommend Enemy (2013) from Denis Villeneuve. :)

Or eXistenZ (1999)

I've seen both as well.

Lost Highway is definitely easier to follow until the transition which was slightly jarring but after a bit I was still able to follow it.

Mulholland Drive however only God knows what the fuck is going on in that movie. That is one of the few movies I have seen that had a scene that made me jump. The transition too....Jesus what an odd movie. I will not allow anyone I know watch that movie high or drunk because they will get spaced the fuck out and question their existence.

Have you seen Eraserhead?

Tombstone is really overrated. I never liked it as a kid, but I just rewatched it as an adult and now I can understand just how goofy it really is.

Enemy was legit. I have seen trailers of eXistenZ but never seen the movie.

Have you heard of The 13th Floor or Dark World?

I've been meaning to see Eraserhead for the longest time. I'd seen the clip with the "baby" but I need to see the whole thing to really appreciate what everyone says about it.

As far as the scene that made you jump...behind the Winky's diner, amirite? Damn near had a heart attack from that one myself.

I have a family member who literally thinks every piece of shit that's ever been released is a good movie.

He thought Rock of Ages was a good movie.

Yep.

I'm checking it out! Thanks for the recommend!

I'm sure you would enjoy it. :)

I'm specifically a big fan of subtle movies with deep messages where you have absolutely no idea what is going on, but after some online research and giving the movie a second try (sometimes third), everything reveals just the way I wanted.

I remember when I first saw the trailer for "Gods of Egypt" I thought to myself, "Wow, what a piece of shit. That thing is going to bomb." When I asked my friends about the movie they were all excited to see it. I read that, sure enough, the movie did in fact bomb and all my friends were surprised to hear that it didn't do well. Go figure.
