If by 'evolved' you mean it has gotten shittier then yes it certainly has. NBA in the 90s was much more physical and you didn't get a foul just because you were within 5 feet of another guy. Basketball today is a farce, everyone is over obsessed with the 3 point shot.

Who's this mythical Prime Cormier?

Cormier had dogshit showings at HW against Monson, Staring, Mir, Nelson, and Stipe 2-3. Who even knows about his earlier career before Monson, but of his known career like half of his fights he looked beatable. People only focus on the times he looked good and pretend that's how he always looked. And let's not even bring up flukes that helped those like Barnett breaking his hand, Lewis coming off a war against a striker and on 3 weeks notice, or Stipe getting eyepoked on the side he got KO'd on.

The best thing he ever did was move down to LHW and start a fake feud with Jones as it allowed his first losses to come from a GOAT, while he was still "youngish", and forced him to (mildly) stop being a fat fuck. The writing was on the wall that a loss was coming sooner or later at HW the way he was looking. He was never some unbeatable HW, he got some very good timing and matchups that let him climb the ranks but it's no coincidence he left once he hit the top 5. And yes it's because Cain was champ, but not because they were friends but rather because Cain would've ran through him like DC openly admitted. JDS also had a very good chance of KOing him, DC didn't have the size or length to do what Cain did (not saying he may not have, just it would've been harder). Etc.

LHW Cormier > HW Cormier and it's likely not even close. And that guy still lost twice to Jones, nearly got KO'd by Rumble, nearly got KO'd/lost to Gus, and gassed/got hurt against a 3 day notice, 198lb, post-surgery Anderson.

Cormier was never unbeatable, in either division.

Basketball hasn't evolved 1% as much as MMA has from '96 to present. It's not a "hybrid" sport that lends itself to rapid evolution. And it was already a mainstream sport with a massive talent pool when MJ started.

Jordan's efficiency numbers are better than LeBron's. And that gap will only widen the longer LeBron plays, as it factors MJ's time with the Wizards.

Randy Couture was an extremely one-dimensional fighter, but he was so fantastic at his trade that he made a successful career out of it. He is more of an exception, just like Demian Maia for example, than the rule. There weren't 10 Coutures hugging people to decision on the cage back then. It was one of him. So Couture can't be an example for the evolution of MMA. Or if we spin it the other way around, if one-dimensional Maia was able to get a title shot only with BJJ five years ago, has MMA evolved at all? Royce was doing more or less the same 22-25 years before that.

I don't believe there is insane amount of "evolution" in the sport. Some things changed - most fighters are well aware of BJJ and don't get caught cheaply and easily. But apart from that we have all the classic fighter types today - the wrestler-boxer or the stand up artist, who had developed a decent enough ground game (specifically TDD) so he can dominate. Honestly how many great fighters are not in one of those two classic categories?
