Umar vs. Merab Round 5 Re-Watch (Scoring Breakdown/Summary/Analysis)

Goddamn it.... 300 words or less!!

Be more concise with your analysis motherfucker.

Ain't nobody reading that wall of data.

My main analysis was the first two paragraphs of the "Analysis" section and it was under 400 words - you could skip the entire post of stats/play-by-play and go straight to the analysis and get the just of it in under a couple minutes.

So many words for what could be said in one sentence: "Buhuhu, my favorite Norma shouldn’t get criticized for this loss — she was a good boi, and if she hadn’t lost, she would’ve won, buhuhu!

Watching it live, I was pretty confident that Merab won. Umar won the 1st part of round 5 but Merab's pace caught up, plus he landed the cleaner striking.

Lol. I know that people hate to read a lot, but if you're going to shit on the thread, at least read the damn thing.

Half of the posts are complaining about stuff TS didn't even say, or agree with what he said and yet still complain.

Anyways, I agreed Merab won the fifth, but I just hate when people showboat, specially someone like Merab who does little to no damage.
I don't hate him, but want to see him get KTFO.

My interpretation at the time of the fight and through a subsequent rewatch is it was a razor close fight that Merab just edged so pretty in line with your take. Merab’s body language compared to Umar’s along with showboating definitely swayed the narrative a lot. When you look at appreciable actions, this fight was about as close as it gets. I maintain Merab won, but this fight was just a few strikes away from a different outcome.
Honestly Merab won because to become the champ you have to beat the champ decisively
It was a very evenly fought fight with Merab winning the optics

No you don’t. That’s not a rule nor should it be. If you win you win. We’ve seen challengers win by split controversial decision several times. Merab won because he landed the best strike of the round in the deciding 5th.

If I'm being honest people like me were expecting Umar to be a nightmare matchup for Merab, so watching Merab melt away Umar's cardio was shocking enough to where we probably rated it more in favor of Merab because he exceeded expectations. It's hard to shake your bias that you have before the fight. I was so confident in Umar, so when he didn't perform like expected, it was easier to lean toward Merab. The takedowns especially, I know you're not supposed to score them, but when you see Dagastani's get taken down like that, even with 0 punches it feels wrong to say it counts for nothing.

Merab has blown everyone out of the water so far, Umar was definitely closest to the win. Outside of Umar I have no idea who could beat Merab besides him getting old. I think this fight could be scored for Umar, but there will never be a universal consensus. Stats say Umar outstruck Merab in the 5th as well. Merab did look fresher so that could also be the bias I made live. This is one of those close fights I'd rather sit out and not be a judge, I'd rather listen to both sides argue why they judged it a certain way.

He did showboat like 4 times in the last 2 minutes of a round he was pretty clearly losing, so I totally get the sentiment.

Merab has a style I hate but appreciate how difficult it is to deal with. There is nothing worse than being tired and have an opponent keep pushing a pace on you forcing you to react and get more exhausted. It’s almost as much mental/psychological as it is physical.

If Yan can stifle his entries to start the fight in the rematch it would be interesting to see how Merab would adjust and what type of confidence it would give Yan to move forward and seize the initiative.

Umar wasted a fuck-ton of energy going for takedowns that he didn’t get. He was winning the stand-up so didn’t even need to, but probably wanted to win everywhere to prove something, and it back-fired and bit him in the ass.

If he just stayed on the outside striking and attempted no takedowns he doesn’t gas as bad and can maybe win another round.

Merab clearly won, and the rounds Umar won were closer than the rounds Merab won.

Yeah if they rematch, I can see Umar drilling cardio even harder and focusing on what worked and what didn't. Also Merab will be older at that point. Merab might be more confident in his own TDs and land more though, his standup seems better too. I'm not making predictions for rematch, going to be hard to predict. I'll just enjoy whoever wins. I have a gut feeling Umar isn't going to make the same mistakes twice and comes out ahead, but weary because I was so confident the first time and he got melted hard by the cardio.

I’m a fan of my Dage brothers. Everyone here knows that but Umar conclusively lost that fight. I rescinded my pre fight comments that he was ready. He clearly needed more time.

But nothing wrong with losing to Merab. Dudes on way to top 10 goat.

It isn't a rule, it shouldn't be, I agree with you but the judges dont view it as such
Else Gustafsson,Reyes would ve beaten Jon, Hendricks would ve beaten GSP, Maynard would be beaten Edgar, Bendo would ve lost to Melendez

Merab won… I don’t think anyone is debating that.

This was a good fight. That means we all deserve to see a rematch before Merab gets too old or retires.

Everyone knows Umar is the biggest threat to his title. If you deny that you’re lying to yourself.

Du Plessis, Lawler, Cruz (2nd reign), and Cejudo all won belts off close split decisions. It’s not a thing, it’s just something people say to excuse poor judging.

Is this the Weasle or just a wannabe?

Lol I always find those breakdowns so comical. This guy truly believes he has them damage meters and I can't ever take them seriously.
