I think he didnt say "i give up", or "tap" he just screamed of pain. Referee just ended it to prevent further damage therefore its a TKO. lets say you eat a big overhand and fall on the mat and then tap out of the strikes then its a verbal submission

If you scream in pain while in a submission the ref stops the fight and the other guy wins by sub. Last time i saw it was when Warren refused to tap to the kneebar and screamed in pain when his knee popped. I assume the same goes in this situation.

Injuries or giving up by screaming or wobbling around in a daze are always called as TKOs in the modern era. Only verbal screams during an actual submission attempt are called submissions.
