Hot Take UFC should cut Jones, Poatan, Chimaev, Topuria

No need to cut anyone.
Just make a time limit on belt holding with no defense - 1 year for example.
If a champ doesn't defend for a year, they get stripped.

Injury, personal issues, problems with the law (looking at Jon lol), whatever the reason may be - it's irrelevant. You have 365 days to defend. If you don't - sorry not sorry, belt is off. You can jump in line when you're ready.

I wish UFC would start cracking the whip. I'm losing confidence we'll ever see another GSP/Silva/Jones that fights all the time for a long run. Once fighters get a big check, it's like they are cool chilling. That's fine, but they should be stripped of belt.
Pantoja and Merab just lost their titles after being highly active. Poatan himself was highly active as well, and is pretty much at the end of his career.

Volk was consistently active for years and cleaned out his division. Adesanya and Usman from the same period did that too. Charles Oliveira has fought multiple times every year except 2023 which was his first fight after losing the belt.

I look at a fight as a 12 week commitment. 10 week camp, 1 week for fight week, 1 week to just go home and recover and decompress. From Pereira's first fight to today, we're at 218 weeks. He's fought basically every 18 weeks for just over 4 years. 12 weeks dedicated to fighting, 6 weeks off, 12 weeks dedicated to fighting, 6 weeks off. Not sure how much more you can ask for from a guy.

The actual time between fights may not actually equal out to that. But that's essentially the dream pattern. Dudes active as fuck and he's getting old. ya'll are crazy.

The stagnancy is directly in line with the UFC's business model. The more a fighter earns, the less they want to book them. Same reason they are fucking gaga over all these 12/12 matches.
You know what would be cool? Fighters get 12/12's and when they retire they get like 10x like 120k each fight they took on the way out. I'm just saying that the fighters that get paid are going 1x per year usually. After they lose after getting paid so much they barely try.

It's the issue with the system how it is, active people get punished, why they sit around. If you could flip through WW rankings when Colby and Burns were like #1 and 2, then watch it side by side next to their fights, basically Burns gets smacked down the rankings while Colby sits around and barely slides down until they have to lower him.

I think the UFC should go back to how it used to, where whoever was stepping up got the push. If rankings faded with inactivity, not having a win also hurts, we'd see more active fighters. The thing is the UFC uses these rankings to trap popular fighters. They only book them with higher ranked fighters and they could be 0-3 for 2 years while someone else is on a 6 fight win streak without a loss ranked #14.

That already technically exists. IMO it should be 8 months, not 1 year. Fighters should not be able to hold a belt fighting once a year, every year. Even one every 8 months is too little, but at least it's not as bad.

Tell me more. Where does that exist?

Oh, so hot take mean like steaming pile

I'm not sure if it's even written down anymore, but they definitely did have a 12 month policy. The problem is that it was not a "rigid" rule. If I'm not mistaken, at least at one point it was something like "after 12 months without a title defense fighters may be stripped of their title.

So even if the rule is still written down, in practice it is worthless. Because the UFC have allowed champions to exceed 12 months without a title defense, without stripping them (McGregor, for example).

These guys don't want to fight. They want to post and get sponsors and talk about moving weight classes. This is bad for UFC, they need guys willing to actually fight and defend their title. They don't need guys looking to move to boxing, talking about changing weight classes, wanting to squat belts and ranks and collect appearance checks outside the org.

Its time to wipe the slate clean for the Paramount era and get rid of these dudes.
Here’s an alternative approach: make the belt a glory item, and spend the money on exciting, active fighters.

- Have bonuses for finishes
- Have bonuses for FOTN
- Have bonuses for the best performance of the night based on fans voting
- Have bonuses for comeback of the night (even if fighter lost)
- Have bonuses for activity, regardless of win/loss

Then pay championship fights less if the above bonuses eat too much into profits.

This is like sports where the olympic or world medal is for glory, but actually doesn’t pay much. The real money is in competitions with money prizes. So you get some athletes who compete little and peak for the olympics or world championships. Then there are others who compete a lot in order to make money and don’t care about olympic glory.

mods should cut this thread.
