Your recitation of the facts is unnecessary--we all know what happened. But your point in incredibly pedantic. You're playing a semantics game to support a very weak argument. I'm tapping out of this silliness.

It is now semantics to point out that the current year is 2023 and not 2022.

ESPY awards are for what happened beginning August of the previous year until June of the current year.

It's done this way because most sport seasons start in the fall and finish in the spring.

For example: the best game award in 2021 was a NFL game between the Ravens and Browns that took place in December of 2020. The 2019 award was a game between the Chiefs and Rams that happened in November of 2018. Etc.

Newly-crowned UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who strangled top contender Ciryl Gane into submission at UFC 285 to secure the strap back in March, was recently nominated for two ESPY awards, including Best Comeback Athlete and Best UFC Fighter.

“I just don’t know if one fight in the year against Ciryl Gane puts you in that position,” Cormier said on his ESPN show “DC & RC” (transcribed by MMA Junkie). “And that’s no knock on Ciryl. It was just one fight. You gotta think of the storylines that follow these other athletes. From (Islam) Makhachev beating [Charles Oliveira] to win the belt, from Makhachev beating Alexander Volkanovski.”

I mean he's right lol

One fight should not net you fighter of the year

The Espy's are a yearly award so they don't list every category as a yearly award cause it would be redundant. Best fighter = best fighter of the year. I'm not confused, you seem to be though.

The awards are handed out half way through the year so the 2023 awards are likely looking at July 2022 to July 2023. In that time frame Edwards and Islam both had better years. Jones should get comeback fighter of the year though.

I’ haven’t watched the espys since norm and his oj. Onslaught.
Best ufc fughter is the same as fighter of the year?
Yeah that is confusing.

I'm aware of that.

The Espys is a yearly award, so they don't say of the year in every single category like the Oscars or Academy Awards are a yearly awards and they don't end every category with of the year because it being a yearly award should already imply that.

I'm aware of that.
Unless I'm misunderstanding the conversation, I don't think you are. Islam has won two championship bouts in the time span that covers the 2023 ESPYs, Oliveira and Volkanovsk.

Yes, he was "at the top" because he represents an emerging market and the UFC gave him highly favorable matchups. He's arguably the best striker in the division, and they exclusively matched him up against strikers. That would be the reason you're looking for.
So you think that from now on every opponent is going to do to gane what jones did to him just because they are wrestlers ? that not the way it works if he faces another wrestler there is no guarantee that fighter would be able to do the same thing.

2022 isn't "this year". "This year" is 2023. 2023 ESPY's eligible time span isn't "this year".

Words matter.

I'll go ahead and bump this post the next time he gets squashed by a grappler.

I agree with DC but I also know that he would have said this regardless since he hates Jon.

That's gotta be the coldest picture in UFC history

I love how the arguably baddest HW in the world, given how close his fight with Francis was, and at least in the UFC at the time, is just in utter disbelief at what Jones just did to him meanwhile Jones is just taking it in stride while also taking the time to mock his haters.

Truly a "there's levels to this" moment perfectly captured forever.
