UFC releases Yushin Okami

There was a time when most fans cared far more about if you were actually one of the best fighters in the world (boring or not), and competed against the best fighters in the world, rather than being the new flavor that many young fans have taken a liking to.

for me since day 1. I doing give a fuck how boring anyone is. I just want to see what actually works and who's the best.

Well said again man. I feel the same way and sadly-Guys like you and i are becoming a rarity nowadays. I have watched MMA since 1993 (when i was 10) and the modern MMA fan cares less about who is the best in the Sport of MMA- but who can "stand and bang" and entertain them.

Uh what. More like Okami is a threat to the majority of the MWs in the UFC let's face it he was a threat to business a threat to new comers that are paid less money.

If he keeps winning then they'll then have to pay him even more money, instead they'll just champion some new comer and make him out to be some tough guy with ballooned up Top 10 rankings while paying them peanuts.

A threat? He may be a threat to guys like Alan Belcher but that's about it. They gave him a shot at the title, what more could the UFC have done?! I understand though that this gives people like you a reason to complain about the UFC....

The UFC should just quit the pretense and say they're Sports-Entertainment like the WWE did.

Many of you can congratulate yourselves on this even taking place.

Many modern MMA fans have created a culture where "flash", and being marketable takes precedent over actually being one of the best fighters in the world.

Very much agree. There are many people out there who would basically like the UFC to consist of 200 Roy Nelson clones, because that would be "proper fighting". Mayhem Miller, who was never a very good fighter to begin with, had legions of fans before he did terribly in the UFC and got crazy. While hardworking guys who beat top opponents get get little love for their lack of "charisma" and whatnot. The sport is about winning, not generating Twitter followers.

It's things like this that made me stop watching ufc events or lobbying my friends to get together and split events. Vote with your wallet. Don't do it just because they cut Okami. Do it because this isn't the first time they've done this. Do it because this won't be the last time they make a cut/decision that kills the legitimacy of the sport, feeds the arguments that mma as a whole is not legitimate and is meant to appease the lowest common denominator of society.

LOL as if anybody who isn't already a die-hard UFC/MMA fan gives two shits about Yushin Okami.

Again, to all these people saying it brings the credibility of the UFC into question... among whom? Is SportsCenter going to cover this? Will any of those people who argue that mma as a whole is not legitimate and is meant to appease the lowest common denominator of society know who Yushin Okami is or have any kind of understanding as to why this is a bad cut?

For Okami fans: If you didn't vote with your wallet by buying every PPV that Okami was on, you have no room to complain.

Well, I've never liked him, but this is a really bad cut. He was a good test to up and comers and no matter how boring his fights were, he was a contender. Go figure.

WTF? I don't care about him at all, but I'm a little shocked.

oh and 3# in the ''Oficial UFC rankings'' yeah that makes sense

Man, Okami has been a mainstay for ages. Just hearing that he's cut is so strange. I'm sure there are organizations ready to swoop him up. Business as usual in the UFC.

You're surely wrong. He is boring and not marketable at all, and doesn't even speak English. Back to Japan for him.

Okami would make a decent fight with any of the top 15 MW's [except for Silva, Weidman and Belfort IMO]. Cutting him while STILL ranked in the top 10 is a joke. Granted, it may have been something as "trivial" as a contract negotiation gone wrong; such as Okami not willing to take a paycut while not being a "major draw". Who knows?

I'm bummed he's gone. Granted he wasn't the most exciting guy, but I always saw him as the gatekeeper for the top 5. If you wanted to prove you're the next big thing then you need to get past Okami. I kind of saw Fitch like this too, but more so Okami. Dammit this sucks. Fucking UFC and their just bleed mentality.

A top 10 fighter that is at the end of his career... Most of the people complaining must know nothing about Football and other major sports......

If you're talking loss as is profitability, sure.

But otherwise, it's a huge loss.

They've released a talented high ranked fighter. I enjoy watching Okami fight. It's a loss for MMA and MMA fans that he doesn't get to compete against some of the best fighters in his weight class.

not in the exact same way but they still gotta save up money when they can. no one wants to watch okami in a ppv event. NO ONE

Its not like they are doing well in PPV anyways, a good reason why they give out Free fights on Fox TV. Hell I don't think anyone outside of North America has to pay to see a UFC event.

The UFC should cut GSP for winning too just saying. No one pays to see him fight outside of Canada anyways. But that is not the point the point is you don't cut one of your own Top fighters especially a UFC pioneer like Okami.

like Zlatan1 said it's a huge credibility loss

that's one top 10 fighter the UFC had that is could have kept. Every top ten fighter that the UFC has that it willingly keeps is thinning out it's divisions and killing it's reputation as the owner of the worlds most elite fighters.

also, Dana said that he can come back if he does a good job in other promotions. That's likely a load of crap. There are two guys out there that can even keep Okami relevant in terms of value of wins: Khalidov and Shlemenko. Even if he beats them, people will say that he just beat overrated can-crushers

My guess is the UFC offered Okami the Munoz or the Kennedy fight and he probably said no, that is why he was fired.
