UFC Heavyweight Tournament?

The SF HW gp was a disaster. Unless its one night its not a real tourney

This is the real answer. If that is how you do a tournament then any top 5 fight in any division is part of one. Unless it's in the same night, maybe the same weekend then it doesn't count. Unfortunately those usually ended up shitty with guys thrown in as replacement winning because a previous winner wasn't able to fight again or the last fight being 2 dudes beat to shit just trying to make it through. It would be awesome but the sport has passed that.

They can barely keep fights on schedule week to week without guys getting hurt or testing for COVID, why would they attempt a tournament?

I thought TS was going to recommend an old-school ONE DAY tournament which I'd be all-in on. Doubt you could get it sanctioned, but if you modified the rules to one 5 minute round per fight I think it would be possible. You know you'd watch.

For years I've wished that they'd do a super heavyweight division where there were only 3 rounds of 2 minutes each. Just fat guys throwing bombs for 2 minutes.
Lets just say it was possible to do a one nighter...what would be the incentive for the best fighters to participate?

Would they get paid their contracted rate each fight? Whats the final prize?

Doubters shall please step to the back of the bus. He could survive a one night tournament if he had to.

After he beats Ngannou again. He hands Jones an honest to God Knock Out loss. Then maybe he retires.
I don't doubt that he could survive a one night tournament, but not the kind of tourney the TS laid out..
I don't think that scenario is crazy by an means, but still that's only 2 fights. I don't think Stipe wants too many more fights.

It would not be better than the SF HW grand prix, but yeah other than that it's a good idea.

I think it would have to come down to pay and/or a vacated title. And I think it only works if you have guys that were the top 4 contenders who weren't otherwise that exciting and/or big enough draws otherwise. I agree it's tough to make the logistics work - I just really want to see it.

Open Weight is even deader than tourneys lol

and Minowaman is 44 yr old. His days of outpacing a plane are done i think.

Why the hell would you say that? I think they should invite an actual plane to the tourney, preferably a 747 boeing. Have the plane square of with minowaman in the beginning brackets so minowa can get an easy submission win.

I'm all for having the plane be in it,but I'm curious how others would do against it. Maybe minowa and the plane can meet in the finals.

The UFC never does tournaments. And they don't give a legit reason why

The reason is because it's always a pain in the ass for promoters : nothing ever goes as planned and there's no proof that it attracts more viewers. The SF HW GP was won by an alternate after a lot of delay and Overeem leaving for the UFC, and the UFC's last official tournament was ruined by a draw, even though there were specific rules against draws.

Well let me first say that I would of course love to watch any tourney...just think the era is dead and not likely to return.

For a tournament like the TS laid out. I think Stipe has three fights in him. But, he's got bigger fish to fry. He has 3 fights left if he NEEDS it. He's got a few years left if he actually wants them. But, I do believe he has one foot out the door, and I respect that. He's looking to the future. He always has.

The rest of the roster doesn't have the experience with behemoths like minowa do to technicaly meet a foe like a plane. It would be a sure minowa vs plane in the Finals. Could work.

I remember that. They put Overeem and fedor on opposite sides of the bracket because that was the final they wanted. Hahah

Look at what happened when Strikeforce tried?

Fedor (his name be praised) was eliminated in the first round
Alistair was taken out of the tourney
A no name Cormier (at the time) won

Was that really worth it? Hardly a satisfying conclusion
Completely different situations, UFC took Overeem, nobody will be taking any of these 8 fighters.

Fedor lost? I mean, do you want controlled outcomes? 99% of the time 1 guy wins & 1 guy loses. That's mma.

As for DC winning, that's a great part of history now. It was the first moment of his legendary journey. Although KO'ing prime TRTfoot was nothing to sneeze at. Yeah it was worth it.

Let's call it for what it was.

Overoid was either ducking BF, or was not able to fight because his roid cycle was off.

Open weight has so much potential. We already know UFC is part entertainment so why can't we have some fun freakshow fights?

More likely this. I dont think Overeem was ever scared to fight anyone. The guy has 90+ fights
