"Today (Monday 22 February) BBC Three announces partnership with the UFC to offer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) coverage
The partnership will see BBC Three offer live commentary and post-fight video through The Daily Drop (1), BBC Three's live page (2), and through BBC Three’s social media accounts (3).

The partnership begins immediately as UFC fighters arrive in London for UFC Fight Night Silva vs. Bisping, which takes place at The O2 arena on Saturday 27 February. The event features nine British athletes, including the main event between Michael Bisping and Brazilian Anderson Silva, regarded as one of the best MMA athletes of all time.

Alongside BBC Three’s live and social media coverage BBC Three will produce short films and content on mixed martial arts - one of the world’s fastest growing sports - and UFC athletes including Conor McGregor, Holy Holm, Ronda Rousey and Michael Bisping.

Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three, says: “BBC Three has a history of covering emerging sports that appeal to young audiences in new ways, and our coverage of UFC will be no different.

"We already offer sport on The Daily Drop and it’s right we cover one of the fastest growing, and most talked-about sports in the world, which has millions of fans in the UK, all in a BBC Three way. The deal is mutually beneficial and demonstrates how BBC Three can experiment with new types of content, from new partners, in new ways.

"Last year we made a documentary featuring MMA and offered live coverage of League of Legends from Wembley with both well received by younger audiences, so in the spirit of innovation, we welcomed the chance to work with the UFC." (4), (5).

James Elliott, UFC EMEA General Manager and Vice President, says: “We are thrilled to be recognised as a valuable asset for BBC Three.

“Audiences across the UK & Ireland are becoming more and more knowledgeable about the skill, athleticism and ethics of MMA fighters and the great events and content produced by the UFC, which is driving fans to seek content from media outlets.

“BBC Three is a perfect fit for UFC and we look forward to an exciting year working together to bring great content to their audiences.”

In addition to the London event, on an ongoing basis, BBC Three will offer editorial coverage of UFC events within EMEA, with a possibility to cover international events.

^^^^ Its a start at least

Good for the UFC I guess, but BBC three is strictly online now?

Can't actually watch the fights on it then ? - so they're effectively doing (1) radio coverage (2) all the post fight vids that sherlegends post anyway ?

This is fucking huge.

BBC is one of the UK's biggest broadcasters that have always denied MMA.

Damn, UFC youtube comment section distorted BBC definition for me

Be interesting to see what happens now when BT Sport's contract runs out in the summer. I wonder if SKY will finally pick it up. They've being reporting on the UFC a bit recently.

yes, they have very little money or at least claim to,so going online was spun as 'what the kids want'...actually the kids still want to watch BBC 3 shows on 40 plus inch screens, the BBC cannot really afford to pay for sports that are of real interest to the British public.

I really don't see the support getting it on Sky has....if it puts up big numbers it goes straight to Box Office and you're paying a stand alone charge like they do in the US

good point, im pretty sure sky will be making there move even if McG loses. if he wins it would be even more certain. I would imagine there mind is made up already.

If Sky put it on Box Office I'm going to be so pissed off. It might be the death of the MMA bubble here unless they start doing more events here at reasonable hours.

No, nor do I. A lot of their Boxing PPVs I'd imagine don't sell all that well.

It's a shame. Obviously with FOX and SKY having the same owners, they could broadcast a lot of content we don't see over here on BT. But SKY must know it's still not popular enough for Box Office. They have more stations to broadcast UFC related programming, instead of a lot of the filler crap they broadcast.

Dana used to always go on about not having the right TV deal in the UK - I assume something like that is what he's looking for starting off, then having it go on PPV.

So are they actually showing the fight?

It's great that the BBC is recognising MMA as a sport and will push a few more folk to check out their online channel. I know I used to watch BBC Three all the time but I'm yet to watch since they moved online.

I hope to god they dont. Sky have a habit or ruining things they pick up. BT have quite a decent team in place who more or less know their stuff. I dread to think how sky would spin it. However, we may get more of the Fox programming that we dont see now.

That's probably another issue. There's only really Conor & Bisping who are high profile names from this area that people who don't watch the sport or have a passing interest would recognise. Bisping doesn't have long to go and Conor seems like he's going to go out long before he reaches Bisping's age.

The guy who covers MMA for the Sun made a good point that if BT don't renew their contract, Fight Pass would be the only available option to watch it on here. And we'd have no choice but to pay for the PPV events if that was the case.

no they aren't showing the fight...its radio commentary at best......they have no other option to recognise it,as they can afford little else....anything a british sport fan wants to watch an event 9 times out of 10 its not on the BBC unless they get help from the government....{government policy certain sports must be shown free to air}
