UFC’s very grim possible near future

Wanting to see a fighter win on their own merits is not wrong. That's called a sport. Boring teams have won championships throughout history in all kinds of sports.

I'm surprised to hear this on a "hardcore" MMA forum.
Sure, I agree that there needs to be merit. No one disagrees with that. No one here would have rooted for CM Punk getting an automatic title shot even if it would have been funny to watch him get slaughtered because its an obvious farce.
Firstly though, I want to be entertained. That's the point of watching a sport, is to be entertained.
James Toney had 0 merit in fighting Randy Couture. However, it was entertaining watching a boxer finally step up and get BTFO. I don't care about Mokaev going to the C leagues because he is worse negative entertainment than Jon Fitch was.
Get it now?

Look, I get it. Would I rewatch Belals fights against Wonderboy or Burns? Would I rewatch Mokaev's fights? No.

I want to be entertained as well.

The key is, would you sacrifice the core of what MMA is supposed to be, fighters entering into a bout under an agreed set of rules to see which style and skills are superior, for the sake of entertainment? I'm not willing to go that far.

Nah, there are a lot of posters who are self-admitted anti-Muslim/Arab/Russian/Dagi/whatever their insecurity may be and who specifically base their fandom on that. I am not reading anyone's mind or assuming. They have straight out said it. Not a problem, people are free to hate whoever, but calling for Daddy Dana to cut these fighters or prevent them from an earned TS shows they have some insecurities they need to deal with.

I am not disputing that at all. People can watch or root for who they like, but when you have posters calling for the promotion to artificially disadvantage guys or even straight cut them based on being boring, dont you think that is a bit of an issue for something that calls itself a sport?

I think that Belal has had boring fights, same with Movsar, same with Ank, in fact I dont even like watching Ankalaev, but I would never call for the UFC to manipulate the rankings or any other variables to prevent him from getting a TS and winning. I want to see the best fight the best and want to see the what style is the most effective under this ruleset. That is all I am saying.
Meh, the sport itself isn't like other sports where everybody plays everybody anyway. These guys only fight a few times/year if that, so it's all just a series of matchmaking and who matches up with whom, and there has never been a set win streak to get a title shot because it depends a lot on timing and who else is where. WW hit a bad snag here with 2 very boring guys that they basically had to make.

Wouldn't even say it's that artificial, it's just a matchmaking call and boring guys who do just enough without ever really dominating anybody don't get a fast path because the whole way up they just show themselves to be only slightly better than the previous guy.

Why include Chim when he hasn't fought and has gone life and death with the best WWs he's taken on so far? We have no clue how he'd do against the more physical MWs at the top.
Its a troll thread

I guess there are degrees to it and I can respect that they need to balance entertainment with the sporting aspect of it, but all I am saying is if a fighter keeps winning they should get their shot even if they are boring.

I want to see two guys who use those styles both efficiently and in an entertaining manner. I'm a GSP nuthugger. I have no issues with exciting grappling, I grapple at least once a week. No, I do not want the likes of Mokaev hugging their way to a title shot, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Belal deserved a shot, undoubtedly, and he got it and made the most of it. Good for him. He's still boring and I don't think there's anything wrong with him having had a longer road to the title than someone who goes in and sparks 5 guys in a row like Shavkat, as outside of winning, how you win is almost just as meritocratic, no?
Who deserves a shot more, someone with 8 split decisions in a row, or someone with 5 finishes in a row against the same competition?

Thats where we disagree. If no one can beat him, then it doesn't matter if he farts his way to a title.

Having the promotion intervene is some really weak shit honestly, it just destroys the sporting aspect of it.

How do we know that the champ of that division is really the best when the promotion had to kick out a guy who was on an undefeated streak and would have eventually fought the champ?

I mean, you are talking about to two guys who are their based on their merit lol the only thing separating them is the finishes, and in that case I dont mind the finisher getting the TS first and the other guy getting the next TS after. That situation is not what I am talking about.

These things have been said for years now, everybody wants to predict the worst possible scenario.

And Chimaev ain't getting a belt, you have to fight to do that.

Yep, the future is pretty boring, I predict prelims becoming more fun than main cards to be more common in the next few years.

Sherdawggers: I cry about this. I whine about that. I complain about everything. I hate everyone. Look at my hate. Let's bask in it.

Could always make a sub-forum where hate and complaining aren't allowed. You could call it something like Polyanna's Place!

This is only grim for mouth breathing rednecks lol. Plenty of fans enjoy the diverse skill set of fighters from the former Soviet block.

It’s an unfortunate instance of there being a bunch of talented grapplers for champs right now, but only generate crickets in terms of marketing. UFC hasn’t done themselves favours with watering down the fight cards and PPV’s on the new TKO model. I actually miss when PPV’s were a big even worth watching.
