Tyron Woodley's Unpopularity Explained by Din Thomas

Why aren't you a Woodley fan (if you aren't)?

He's whiny. And he is the least offensively minded champion I've ever seen. He also annoys me by fighting like Rashad Evans. Tense-tense-tense-flex muscles-EXPLODE USELESSLY-tense-tense-flex-back up to fence-tense-EXPLODE and hope it pays off!

His personality is boring, any problem he has it must because he is black, it’s boring. He’s successful as he can be in his sport he just wants more and to be loved by everyone.

Haven't liked him since he ducked Lombard

He annoying, constantly is whining about why he isn't ''respected''. Just fight Woodley, and the respect will come.

Pretty sure he gets the exact same hate white fighters in his position saying the things he does get.

Tyron has that annoying millennial mindset and data shows that the average MMA fan is like 60 now.

I just wish he'd stay more active. Tired of champs spending months on end in vacation mode.

Yes, when is a black man going to get a fair shake in the fight game? I mean America hates black athletes in general, right? Lol. Jesus Christ......
All athletes have fans, and all athletes have haters, regardless of skin color. Cormier is much more well liked than Woodley, yet he's black too..... what's going on? Well, here come the black voices that chime in, "Cormier isn't black enough, it's only because he acts white....". So, black people should only act one way, and their personality and life choices should fit in a neat little box of 'what it means to be black'? That's the most most racist, self loathing garbage I hear from some black people, the ones that make a lifestyle of complaining about racism in America.

being black is definitely not the reason people don't like him. The guy comes up, then hits cruise control worse than gsp, playing it safe to win decisions, all while stating he only wants money fights. He hasn't cemented shit to start calling shots. He's way too pick and choosey to be a fan favorite. People like the "I'll fight anyone anywhere" mentalities.

Yep, support all black athletes with your attention, money, and admiration or else you’re racist and just can’t stand a black man having stuff. How fun sports are these days!

Woodleys problem is not that he’s liked or disliked. The problem with Woodley is the fans are indifferent to him. He only gets attention outside of fight night if he becomes accusatory to fans who otherwise don’t care about Woodley.

There is rarely malice or agendas behind apathy.

I’m just wondering what it is Tyron wants. Does he want to be admired or does he want his delusions of being the hated brash black man to turn him into some Floyd-esque bad guy fighter that the fans love to hate with their money?

Ticked all the boxes, what can i say

Part of it (not all of it) is going after fights that are good for him, rather than fights fans want. And given how the UFC treats most fighters, I can't blame him.

So yea, mostly because he isn't running over pregnant women.

“He’s not all that relatable to people,” Thomas told the UFC Unfiltered podcast yesterday. “He’s a wealthy black man that speaks his mind, people don’t like that. People didn’t like Cam Newton when Cam Newton was loud and brash. People just don’t like wealthy, large black men to speak their minds.

Disagree. People don't like it when minorities blame not getting what they want immediately on racism. Tyron had literally had the belt on his waist for 5 minutes before he was whining about not getting paid in "money fights". NO ONE in the UFC was getting Conor money besides Conor, Not Tyron, or the popular champ he had just defeated.

Being called a racist carries severe social implications these days. It can cost you your career and it is a minefield for anyone in the public eye to navigate. This is because any comment that can be twisted into a racial slur - however unintentional - will be taken out of context and used against the speaker regardless of their past record. For Tyron to play the race card so soon and so frequently when his championship reign began rubbed people the wrong way, just not the way Din Thomas sees it. Quite frankly, people do not like being accused of something that is not only untrue, but also carries severe punitive repercussions with it.

Tyron made his own bed. Being outspoken is different than making false charges against people. Deal with it.

Jon Jones is somehow still immensely popular and he has literally done everything wrong over and over again.

If this was a race issue, he would be impacted negatively as well.
So you didn't read his commentary...

“Here’s the thing: Jon Jones is a lot more relatable because Jon Jones doesn’t come off like he’s great,” Thomas suggested.

Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler when everybody wanted Robbie to destroy him.

Then the fans expected Wonderboy to finish him and he did nothing to Woodley in 10 rounds of fighting.

Then Woodley shut down Demian Maia for 25 minutes with a torn shoulder.

Hate all you want but make no mistake the man is a fighting champion.
