Two steps verification on Sherdog WTF??

All good Sherfam!

<RomeroSalute>

As i've said in this thread already, anyone who genuinely needs help with any of this don't hesitate to hit me up, PM if you're too embarrassed to post in the thread.. Don't wanna see any Sherbros leave over this, even the worst ones.
Unfortunately I foresee many leaving out of principal/hassle avoidance

Others who aren't weekly users (of which there are many) will be blindsided by this new reality when they return the next time and may not bother, or like many of us, may not know how to do it and won't be able to log in to ask for assistance.

One week is a very short amount of time and it creeps me out that no staff member is willing to share what prompted this sudden change and the short-notice timespan within which to accomplish the task.

I understand, it's a shame.

It was seemingly prompted by someone getting hacked, a few have been hacked recently supposedly and someone may have had their account banned as a result..
I would imagine the Admin have asked for advice on what to do to prevent that happening to make the Forum safer and more professional and this was the suggestion. I don't think it's anything sinister, just an inconvenient necessity.

Sounds like maybe one person was loose with not paying close attention to their security-free phone's whereabouts or let a friend use their computer or tablet with their account logged in, someone fucked with them and they lost their account as a result.

Boo hoo.

Looking through the Xenforo forums I don't see anything backing up the statement here that they "strongly recommend 2fa" and it would be nice if staff were able to address this, however I understand if that's asking too much

I don't think it was just 1 person though, seems to have become a frequent occurrence recently from what I can tell having read a few mod posts on the site..I think said hacking is happening digitally not physically.. Like it's not in Sherdog's best interests to make it harder to log in, go down for an entire weekend and have multiple members leave, I can't imagine this is some early Christmas present for us lol.

I'm just speculating really on that, I have no idea how the communication has gone down, just occam's razor . when a Problem arises people tend to seek help, help isn't always an easy process.. Any change will always be criticised when you have such a large pool of people, it could be worse i'm sure.

This directive came down from Xenforo, the forum platform that hosts Sherdog. I doubt they'd suggest something that they know will destroy a product they maintain.
No way they'd do this just to mine a bunch of data from their users, must be a perfectly reasonable and totally benevolent reason they want more of our information to access a karate forum.

I searched the forums on their site and didn't find anything about this, although I only searched back to July but still confused by that statement

That's the thing, though. They could have just said that. It's not like people are asking for gritty details, just a basic explanation. Instead, they've dipped, so... Not a great look, is it?

It's definitely for their own perceived convenience though. It's clearly not to the benefit of users, there's nothing of value to steal on a karate forum's user account. Xenforo themselves only recommend 2FA for accounts with special privileges (admin, mod). This community is also older than average, which anyone with sense would take into account. So the only conclusion is that they're OK with losing a bunch of users and inconveniencing everyone else because it makes their lives a little easier. Insane mindset for a website owner, but not surprising when large corporations own stuff and the people who manage the products are removed from the consequences of their actions.

I've heard it mentioned by at least 2 people who are either mods/admin, the communication has been a little shoddy, but it's there to some extent.. Perhaps there is too much going on behind closed doors to make any more firm announcements, I don't know, I see your point though.. Even mods were taken off guard with the site closing over the weekend so I can't imagine everyone is on the same boat at all.

What about people who have used Card details to become plat members? I would imagine if hacking issues are becoming more and more prevalent then something proactive is a smart move no? Like if your shit is mistakingly getting your account banned and you're none the wiser I can see how the communication could be very complicated to fix a situation like that, especially if it's happening more and more often.

Am i reading this right? We need to do that within a week? That would be sad as I am really not sure that I ll bother. I hate that shit when I must for work, i won t do it for a fucking choy lee fut forum. Sorry.
Hacked

If you value this Karate forum , you WILL comply

The Sherdog Ship is sinking boys. Captains of this vessel have headed towards the bridge to ride her out.

There may be a few members left behind to play music while she sinks, but they’ll never rally good spirits, just a calming presence.

It’s been a long time coming. The ad riddled, unusable conditions they created the past 3 years have made sherdog.com/forums a wooden canoe on the North Sea.

Shame really. Jeff Sherwood had a vision and a site, and it worked. Then he sold out and everything was ad based gluttony formerly known as sherdog.com

No hard feelings, got a big kick out you members for 14 years, lots of laughs and useful insight. Mayberry is my home, and I appreciate all the members. Different walks of life coming together to talk about life.

A lot of you guys are funny as hell too, just icing on the sherdog cake.

I think I got 5 days left as member before my 14 year account is deleted. Have fun boys.

Every 30 says is a deal breaker for people that post a few posts per week or sometimes go for weekd without posting.
My bros @Clippy @ChickenBrother @fungi @HHJ it‘s been fun but I really may not bother. Take care.

Bro, this is kind of like if a skateboarder who was about 29 years old and had 4 inches on you was at full speed and veered into your side of the walkway and purposefully shoulder checked you in the face. Then immediately gets in your face as you're still dazed and tells you he wants to eff you up and has his board up and ready to knock you out.

Do you 1) quickly assess the situation and back off after telling him to eff off and then never come back again; or 2) fill the street with uppercuts and continue shitposting because you can?

Hope you go with option 2 brother.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

“But Rhett, what will become of me?
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe.
And all those memories are like tears in the rain..

Time to die.”
