@fortheo revisiting the book which I finished in 3 sittings this week, it's astonishing how much Pullman is able to do in such few words. I find that details of the world I remember vividly came not from their explicit description, but from connections I made between events or his brief comments on some character's perception of the situation.
It's extremely efficient writing for a fantasy novel - very Narnia-esque. Could be a double-edged sword though, since it's easy to know which events to adapt, but hard to do it in such a way as to capture that imaginative density.
