The credit he deserve is the ability to leverage his image as a "successful businessman" in order to con an impressionable and sizeable % of the population into thinking that he is competent, then using language to rile his supporters into believing he's on their side and will be the voice of their grievances. He's also slippery by using mob-like code language to get others to do his bidding out of fear of repercussion.

On those close to him and their assessment of his intelligence, we know those close to him had this to say

-Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson allegedly called him a f*****g moron, and never denied saying it.
-His former University of Pennsylvania professor William T Kelley allegedly said he was the dumbest goddamn student he ever had, although, in the spirit of honesty, this is second hand information of those close to him.

-His tweets were routinely full of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.The kind of mistakes you wouldn't expect from a 5th grader, much less from the President of the United-States of America.
-His vocabulary is extremely limited. I think the most advanced word he ever used was "braggadocious"
-His university and high school academic records are locked away and hidden in a secure location after a special request made by Trump's former lawyer under threat of legal repercussion; a more than highly unusual request. This fact is confirmed by Cohen himself.

I also don't want to assume he's coginitively limited. It's possible his lack of general knowledge and intellectual capability are the result of everyone doing everything for him, a lack of intellectual curiosity, prioritizing appearing intelligent over actually being intelligent (superficial intelligence rather than in-depth intelligence), focus on acquiring material wealth rather than increasing knowledge capital and believing material wealth translates into overall intelligence.

He's just not up to par for what we would expect a President in that regard.

But for all his faults in his intelligence, his overall moral character is far more damning. His propensity to lie is second to none. He has little to no empathy; a trait required for his narcissism. He also feels his detractors must suffer a consequence worse than what was dealt to him; he's a known bully who used to litigate his critics into submission and now uses social media and his platform to send his fans into online trolling and bullying, or even into violent destruction like his January 6th plea to march to the Capitol and "fight like hell".

Why do Trump defenders with TDS pretend 6 years is some anomaly when it comes to investigations and prosecutions

Do you know they estimate it might be 3 more years before the NY AG civil suit against Trump hits a court?

Do you know they investigated Bill Clinton for 6 years over White Water and settled on getting him for a blowjob?

These cases take a lot of time, but one by one we can see these cases against Trump seem to only get stronger and are progressing to numerous charges, which we have started to see.
