The Chinese government announced its response to the Trump administration’s latest huge tariff hike on the country’s exports in written form, at 18:00, on a Friday night, which is also a public holiday.

The timing could mean several things.

It wanted to somewhat bury the news at home in terms of the attention these measures might get, so as not to spook people too much.
It simply made the announcement as soon as its own calibrations had been finalised.
Beijing had given up on the hope of using a small window (prior to Trump’s 54% tariffs on Chinese goods taking effect next week) to do a deal so the government just decided to let it rip.
If it is the last of these, that is pretty bleak news for the global economy because it could mean that a deal between the world’s superpowers could be harder to reach than many had expected.

Another indicator of Xi Jinping’s attitude towards the Trump tariffs can be seen by what he was doing when they were announced.

Other governments may have been glued to the television, hoping to avoid the worst from Washington.

Not here.

Xi and the six other members of the Politburo Standing Committee were out planting trees to draw attention to the need to counter deforestation.

It presented a kind of calmness in the face of Donald Trump, giving off a vibe along the lines of: do your best Washington; this is China; we’re not interested in your crap.

Tarriffs keep the market fair in our case since we’re very powerful even if we avoided Canadas oil it would still be more expensive to do it here in our own country and that’s just one example of what Trump thinks is a good idea despite everyone telling him how an actual very bad tarriff policy works bc the truth is that big chart he had showing all those Tarriffs was just made up they weren’t even thought out ,he basically just took a marker and started jotting numbers down and called it liberation day even though he hurt us more ,you fool . Um yeah. US manufacturing power has been totally lost to foreign entities over the past 30-35 years . We've lost all of what we used to lead the world at and gained nothing.We produce next to nothing now. Countries are buying from China what they used to buy from us. Products we used to produce are being built in Mexico and sold to us. etc, etc , etc.

I mean, you need no more proof that what the tariffs have done in the short term. We ask for a little more and its a literal economic apocalypse. We have been raped repeatedly in trade.
