Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

30 years ago Nancy Pelosi said tariffs are good so why are democrats mad that the economy is tanking?

How about will Q4 have 4% growth or better, with significant manufacturing increases? That being a better indication to me of the economy

As a bystander, I think you could measure from an agreed period in the future to an agreed point before tariffs were even tabled, so perhaps before Trump's presidency began. The reasoning is that markets had already costed some of the tariffs into their predictions.

“The ones-- the ones that get very sick and go to the hospital are the ones that don't take their vaccine. But it's still their choice. And if you take the vaccine you're protected”

That's not saying that it stops the spread smh

You guys are clowns who won't admit that at the very beginning of covid no one knew anything and scumbags like fauci were spreading fear and misinformation and around this time people went with it.

That doesn't excuse the retards who were still saying the vaccine would stop the spread in 2022 after 2 years of case studies available to prove that it didn't stop the spread

Smh

Strange. 16-20 years ago when I was in college, rightists argued for competitiveness in the world market through globalization of trade and labor and my liberal friends argued we needed to keep jobs domestic and not support slave wage companies like Nike. It's a topsy turvy world.

Man i miss the HW Bush era.

👶🏻

Indeed! We had a level of corporate and government investment in America (relative to nominal GDP) during Biden’s term that hadn’t been seen since the 1980s.

Yeah, industrial policy is going to be the biggest bright spot when people are looking back on that presidency. It already is.

That Trump quote is from Dec 2021. What you are essentially doing is playing a hyper specific semantic game. He didn’t use the exact words stop the spread. He said the vaccine would end Covid and if you take it you are protected. Do you think those two statements are true and if not why is that better than using the term stop the spread?

the economy is tanking under trump's america? is this all on george soros or which democrat do we blame?
Blaming Soros is getting boring and my last Soros check was a little light. The gop needs to find a new holocaust survivor to blame everything on I think.

So these are reciprocal tariffs, correct. They charge the US tariffs so we charge them the same. What is wrong with that.

Also we should not be dependent for basic needs on other countries. They can be used against us on many levels.

Tariffs are used widely across the world. Even under free trade agreements, there often tends to be one or two small elements where tariffs and protectionism exist. Often these exist for political reasons (a particular industry in that country has a lot of sway) or for security purposes (maintaining your own farming or manufacturing industries rather than offshoring everything maintains security for your country).

But to repeat, generally those tariffs are fairly narrow. I also support every countries right to prioritise its own citizens and their wellbeing over others.

What's happening now is an entirely different conversation to what I've just written about. Tariffs are being applied in the most extreme ways possible, both in their size and how widespread they are, and often against countries that are firm allies of the US and/or have a trade deficit to the US. These are countries that are a net benefit to the US and its standing in the world.

For that reason, comparing a comment on tariffs in one context to tariffs in this is not going to give an accurate reflection of that persons view.

The fact that this isn't true.

I can't speak to other countries, but Australia has a free trade agreement which makes 99.9% of all trade between our countries tariff free. Australia also historically has a trade deficit with the US. Australia is a firm long term ally of the US and yet is being tariffed.

As a general observation, the methodology is also nothing to do with reciprocity and more to do with trade deficits. You can look up their method and realise that it is just not true.

No, they're not reciprocal tariffs.

The Trump tariffs are not based on what tariffs the other country has, but rather a trade deficit.

Poor countries can't afford your shit, so they don't buy much, but you buy a lot from them because they're poor and therefore the goods are cheap in your currency.

Get it?

Basing tariffs on trade deficits is universally seen as dumb as shit. It's pandering by a bunch of 'yes men' to an idiot with too much power and not much idea.

So taking advantage of poor people is seen as a good thing by the demorats now.

Front page of the rightwing tabloid the Daily Mail

Asked about tumbling stocks on Thursday as he boarded Air Force One to attend a golf dinner in Miami — as the Dow Jones was down 1,400 points — Trump said: 'I think it is going very well.'

May be he is right, may be the markets will boom ...who knows..

Some insiders / billionaires will known how to exploit this situation and make out like super bandits.

I am not against tariffs per se, just against Trump applying it to allies and in such a blunt fashion. I think a better solution would be to punish corporations who won't move most of their manufacturing from China back to the US or part of it to friendly countries.

I just explained how the tariffs work, how they're not reciprocal, and why they're dumb.

This isn't a valid retort.

Do you think they're a brilliant idea, or a bit foolish?

I think we shall see if this is a fuckup or gets what Trump thinks it will.

I want more things manufactured in the US especially basic needs. I want any tariffs on the US by another country reciprocally charged by the US.

I'm not sure if this is going to work out the way he thinks by we will see.
