I'm a criminal defense lawyer and former public defender in CA and that is absolutely untrue. The cole memo had a very significant effect in CA, not only in terms of enforcement at the time, but also as essentially the first domino in the sequence that led to state legalization.

Anyone who thinks the cole memorandum wasn't important is a total idiot and has probably never seen either a bust or the inside of a criminal courtroom

The Cole memo made a difference, but Obama was and is a pussy - he didn't change shit. It is an objective fact that DEA raids in N. Cali never stopped under the Obama admin.

Not smart at all politically. It's popular with wingnuts in the base, but grossly unpopular overall. Support for legalization has trended up sharply in the US over the past 15 years.

Cali is among the lowest five states as far as federal aid as a percentage of general revenue. We don’t owe the country any exorbitantly high taxes on anything.

The top 9 welfare states with the biggest percentage of their revenue being federal aid (coming from liberal states like Cali) are conservative. So if conservatives are leeching tax dollars so much why don’t we place exorbitantly high taxes on booze and fast food just in these welfare states so they call pull their obese asses up by their boot straps?

If conservatives love fiscal responbility and being fat so much, give them both.

Because Section 280E doesn't apply to booze and junk food. I agree that you don't owe other states anything (that's a conservative mantra) but liberals DO love taxation and weed and now you get both. Add in an exorbitant state tax on it for yourself. Everyone wins. You get pot and funds to help your precious poor people -- win win!

Well as I just showed, the problem with taxes is mostly YOUR poor people. So it's not a win - win, for that to be true our shockingly fat and illiterate friends in the south would have find the fiscal responsibility and state independence that is the liturgy of their party instead of prolonging their begging from us. That's not going happen if we keep their state running from all the way over here in Cali.

Not sure what your point is here - federal tax on Marijuana impacts all states that legally sell it, not just California and the argument for that was to introduce taxation with it. The exorbitant business tax was brought forth by a liberal executive.

I agree that the scope of us federalism should be bottom up and that states should have no real responsibility to fund the have nots. But in the article I link it shows why Marijuana is subjected to higher tax rates over other items such as booze and cigarettes (mind you every other first world nation taxes those way higher than the US so liberals get on board with that too.)

I'm all for cutting off the conservative states, but that in no way deters from the fact that the trump admin should back states rights on the matter while taxing the industry hard (as should the states themselves)

And, thus far liberal states are the ones pushing for increased taxation and legalization -- so sure, red states may like their drugs but it's liberals ones pushing for the states rights on it.

So, yes, you can smoke your bowls and generate revenue for the poor by implementing sky high tax on weed. Win win for you guys.
