WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is rescinding the Obama-era policy that had paved the way for legalized marijuana to flourish in states across the country, two people with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. Sessions will instead let federal prosecutors where pot is legal decide how aggressively to enforce federal marijuana law, the people said.

The people familiar with the plan spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it before an announcement expected Thursday.

The move by President Donald Trump’s attorney general likely will add to confusion about whether it’s OK to grow, buy or use marijuana in states where pot is legal, since long-standing federal law prohibits it. It comes days after pot shops opened in California, launching what is expected to become the world’s largest market for legal recreational marijuana and as polls show a solid majority of Americans believe the drug should be legal.

While Sessions has been carrying out a Justice Department agenda that follows Trump’s top priorities on such issues as immigration and opioids, the changes to pot policy reflect his own concerns. Trump’s personal views on marijuana remain largely unknown.

Sessions’ policy will let U.S. attorneys across the country decide what kinds of federal resources to devote to marijuana enforcement based on what they see as priorities in their districts, the people familiar with the decision said.
See not so bad afterall as US Attorneys will make the final decision. Well, about that -

With a deadline looming, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is using executive authority to name 17 interim U.S. attorneys in cities from coast to coast.

Seven of the prosecutors have been serving as acting U.S. attorneys since President Donald Trump axed dozens of the lead federal prosecutors in March, but there's a 300-day limit on that status. The other 10 will replace current acting prosecutors, who get bounced back to their old jobs.

Not to mention that Trump fills all the Us Attorney spots with his own nominees, and except for NY, DC and Florida Trump doesn't give much of a shit about any of them so they'll be filled by people Sessions wants.

What happened to letting the states decide?

The entire conservative mantra about believing in states' rights has always been horseshit. They've proven time and time again that they will use the federal government to intervene with state laws that they don't like. On the state level, the red states frequently use the state legislatures to slap down policies in liberal cities and municipalities (e.g. bathroom bills).

The only time they actually care about states rights is when it concerns the rights of a state to discriminate against some group of people that don't form part of the GOP base.

Oh and for the umpteenth time, LOL at the people who actually thought that Trump was serious about criminal justice reform RE narcotics even after he picked Sessions to be his AG. Trump's stance on policing and the criminal justice system is to let the prison industrial complex in the US continue to run amok.

Republican-ish here. States should decide. Stop big government.

Republicans cry about states rights until it's states they disagree with. It has always been their methods.

This is similar to Hawaii saying 'if you have a marijuana license, hand over your guns' in that, this is still illegal on the federal level. So proceed with caution.

Could be an interesting 'States rights' battle coming up. I don't know why they don't just legalize it on all levels. What's the hang up, honestly? This has the feel of 'hey, you wouldnt give in here, well we're not gonna budge on this then'

It's dumb. And it comes across that way.

The party of "states' rights" is a fraud, that's what happened.

This was known eons ago.

Both parties are frauds, and their juggling our rights over their stupid political 'tug-o-war' over fuck knows what.

Jeff Sessions has always had a rather autocratic bent to his beliefs.

And Trump will do anything to fire up the Trumpians at a whim.

Both parties are frauds, and their juggling our rights over their stupid political 'tug-o-war' over fuck knows what.

Bothsideism doesn't work when one side in particular is screwing the proverbial pooch.

Good try though.

can someone prosecute him for perjury already?

He needs to go for a stroll in traffic.

I am not sure which constituency will really rally around this?

Pharmaceutical lobbyists, rope producers of America, or a very select group of Evangelicals?

This decisions is liable to further turn out the Democrats already hyper energized and angry base.

How many moderate Republican Congressmen in legalization states might be toppled by this? Mr. Trump, you might consider taking a walk off the putting green and reign in Mr. Sessions.

The last president instructed the justice department to back off on marijuana enforcement. Now we're seeing the complete opposite. Both sides though am i right?
