Television True Detective: Night Country- Season 4

Eh, debut episode for season 4 was OK. Not exactly clamoring for the next episode, but I will finish this season off.

The big weak spot is the acting. Jodi Foster was literally the only performance that had any weight to it at all. That's not promising.

Are police officers allowed to have cheek piercings?
Technically I think grooming standards aren't particularly codified on most departments, the language just says something about "professional" and so up there the rules are probably looser, a take what they can get type deal. Also there might be exceptions for natives even if those don't seem authentically tribal

Yeah, I don't think they checked.

hmm, watched it, something's off, like there's a mismatch between the actors. granted, it's clear jodie foster is miles ahead of anybody in here, and i don't know if it's from that, but it's like watching a chess club composed of me, two random bums from the street and magnus carlsen, and the matches where there's no carlsen involved look like the special olympics of chess.

it does look good though, and transmits the darkness and quiet despair of the environment, but i feel it has to do more to rise up from the nature documentary level it sits at now.

I'm worried about the supernatural shit, the show has always stayed grounded in realism. I really hope there is a realistic explanation of everything that is happening.

Even if the first episode is slow, I think the different environment adds to it. I really like the foreboding feeling of a dark, snowy setting. People just need to divorce themselves from the title ("True Detective") and treat it like its own thing. Comparing it to the first season is basically making it impossible to be good. I saw the first episode, and while I'm not film critic, "I know what I hate. And I don't hate that."

I'm a fb group for a Call of Cthulhu type game that was discussing the show and one person said "Fun fact: before the premiere, I was in a press conference with the producer/writer (and cast), and I asked her specifically about the inspiration from Lovecraft and Chambers. Turns out she's a massive Mythos nerd"

So they might be leaning more into that than before

The show begins with a quote from The King in Yellow so I'm expecting some references. But I hope what happened at the research facility isn't supernatural in origin.

Maybe something fungal they dug up explains the scientists, but I'll be interested how they square that circle with the interpretive dancing ghost

That whole mumbo jumbo about voices telling same stuff about "She's awakend" to different people, dead dancing guy showing his wife frozen corpses and reindeers doing mass suicide anin't supernatural to you?
Where exactly do you live, my friend? In Jotunheim?

Looks heavily like it. But so far I like it, only thing I disliked was the scope, I'm not a fan.
Also Policeofficer with piercings in fucking alaska? I don't think so. It's a risk when you get punched and its shit cold in alaska, that metal will be down on the scale quite fast.

No sane person would get that in their cheeks there. I'm not sure if allowed based on risk potential.

I wouldn’t mind a light touch of super natural but if they go into full on fantasy territory I’m gonna be bummed.

Not to mention @HenryFlower it's the positive reviews that are largely review bombed, not the negative ones.

I thought episode one was fine. 6/10. The main problem was it doesn't feel like True Detective. It feels like another show. The supernatural stuff seemed really out of place for True Detective.

Jodi Foster was the only impressive acting performance, the characters were not interesting, there were lazy little details they missed like a cop walking around with cheek piercings while on duty.

Even the story of the activist being killed was confusing. It contradicted itself. She was killed for being an activist and threatening people's way of life. But then the trooper who got kicked off the case tried to make it about her being female and native when clearly the motive was that she was making problems for all the people who relied on the mine for work.

Seasons 1 and 2 of the Killing had a story line about how powerful men treat women as disposable and it was anchored by tremendous performances and didn't feel forced.
