Traveling to Bulgaria

A nice thing to do in Sofia is walking tour, you just have to sign up and show up at some hour/place, then you'll be in a group of tourist like you for like 2-3 hours walking around city with local guy explaining everything about city's history and give some aadvices about wheree eat good etc

Does'nt have fixed price, end of the tour you'll give him amount you think is adequate/due

If we have time to do it became a nice habit do it like day1 so rest of the days when you're around you have bit easier time understanding what you're seeing around

I'm planning a two week trip in the middle of May to Bulgaria. I'm mostly interested in exploring cities, enjoying local food/drinks, and seeing nature/hiking. So far, I know I want to stay a few days in Sofia and a few days in Plovdiv, I also want to do the 7 Rila lakes but I am not sure if this is doable in May. I'm planning on doing an excursion from Plovdiv to the Rhodope mountains to hike which seems like it may be more doable this time of year. I will likely also do a day or two in Veliko Tarnovo as it looks very interesting.

Does anyone who's been to or lived in Bulgaria have any recommendations or advice about this general itinerary? Would be much appreciated!

I'd say that looks spot on man.

Sofia is a cool city. Veliko is cool too. I was there in winter and weirdly went to Varna (beach resort) and it was, understandably, like a ghost town - very surreal experience.

Yeah I like to do those if I get the chance.

Sofia was a decent city.
Was only there for 3 days. Overall thought food was good. Noticed in gym there, people seem to be more fit & more jacked dudes than in the other Baltic cities I had visited. Fitter city overall imo.
Balkan, you must mean. Baltic is typically area of Estonia through Latvia and ending in Lithuania. Regional cities would be Riga or Tallinn, for example.

Solid enough country but pretty unremarkable, truth be told.

Awesome to hear - I'm looking for places to stay in Plovdiv and was surprised to see that there are not many hostels compared to other cities/towns. I usually like to stay in hostels (in privates as I don't like sleeping in a room with strangers) just for the social element but it looks like there's not a many options there. Have you been to/stayed in Plovdiv? If so, any recommendations or is AirBnB the way to go?

Or they could have called them all Karen. No favouritism there...

Karen I, Karen II, Karen II, Karen IV, Karen V, Karen VI...

Yea, but then they ALL get upset . Especially the boys . Well , except for that one but you'll get that in all big families...

This essentially describes me nowadays - best of both worlds, private room but with the highly social element of being in a hostel. I can do a dorm at a push, though. Tend to alternate between hostels and hotels when I go away now. Never been to Plovdiv, no - booking.com is probably your best bet.

Easy to understand language is a plus. I always liked North Macedonia more if i want to go to a country filled with bulgarians.

Funny enough, Karén is a popular male name in Armenia
