I agree a trans athletes shouldn't compete against females. But sports are a niche hyper simulated environment where society goes to great lengths to discriminate by every physical factor like age, sex, size, strength etc. so it's a niche social issue we just need to solve. Outside of it's confines, it doesn't say much of anything about gender expression in culture.

If western males hadn't been historically highly discriminatory towards trans folks in their spaces, like in thailand, trans folks would likely be more comfortable competing with the sex they were born as. But they have been treated like dog shit in those spaces so they avoid them. It's mostly an issue our own close minded approach to the trans community created itself.
