First thing first, I normally hate super-hero movies. I hated most of them in the last 5 years. I even took the oath to never be fooled into watching a DC / Marvel movie ever again. Last time I made an exception, I regretted it immensely: everyone was hyping Deadpool and claiming it was the best super-hero movie ever. So I watched it and really disliked it. I will not go into the "why", I have an entire post about it in the Deadpool thread.
Still, there are some gems in that style. Among all the pile of crap released by the mega-studios, some super-hero movies are deep, artistic and complex. Not the obligatory "get-the-magic-item-back-from-the-supervillain-who-stole-it" or "destroy-the-humanity-to-save-the-humanity". Here is my top 5 super-hero movies, with an ironic twist at #1:
#5 Guardians of the Galaxy: At last, a super-hero movie that doesn't take itself seriously. Might be too goofy for some but I found it well balanced between goofy and dark. The soundtrack is great for old-timers like me (I'm 40) and the heroes are not too powerful. In fact, they don't really have super-powers at all, just the ability to do incredible things. The only super-hero movie I didn't dislike in the last years.
#4 The Dark Knight: Not a particularly good movie but Heath Ledger stole all the hype and made the movie his own. The last Batman movie I was able to appreciate. I tried "return" and "rise of" but they just didn't work for me. And don't ask me to watch Benman, there's in no way it will happen!
#3 Watchmen: Ambitious and strange. Filled with political commentary, brutal action, and a giant blue naked guy whose powers have essentially transformed him into God. There has never been a movie quite like Wathmen and I doubt we will see another in a near future. The animated pirate story is brutal and strangely ironic in its conclusion. Not a single known actor in this movie, very rare for this kind of movie. Underrated for sure!
#2 V for Vendetta: Awesome movie overall. Classic revenge story intertwined with some deep social matters. A sort of homage to Orwell's 1984 mixed with The Crow. A super-hero back from the dead kills his enemies in a society were deviation from the norm is a death sentence. Shout out to Natalie Portman's crying scene, one of the best of I ever seen. My favorite "real" super-hero movie. All in all, the best Wachovski movie since the Matrix. Yeah!
#1 Birdman: Ha! Got you there! Yes, it is a super-hero movie: the movie is about an actor who decides to abandon his super-hero movie character to pursue an new career in theater. He possesses super-hero powers and he has an alter-ego. I don't see why it shouldn't be considered a super-hero movie! No explanation needed, the movie is a hidden gem in an ocean of mediocrity. My favorite movie of the last 5 years.
