Nintendo Top 20 NES games from the Rolling Stone

Sure. But it was unique. And unlike a lot of gimmick peripheral games it worked. So it's a treasured memory for many casuals who don't care about other games. I'm talking about the same girls who otherwise might throw up an "eww" face if you started talking about gaming. Their faces light up if you talk about Mario Kart, Duck Hunt, Wii Bowling, Fall Guys, shit like that.
Im not saying it wasnt a good (albeit simple) or memorable game, just saying that appeal to a small segment is not justification for an all time best list, imo.

Its an ok list but more of nostalgia than actual gameplay.

Ducktales is top 20. I still remember playing Final Fantasy for the first time at the Nintendo Power world championships in 1990 and that game is definitely top 20. So is River City Ransom.

18. Blaster Master
17. Ninja Turtles 3
16. Excitebike
15. Super DodgeBall
14. StarTropics
13. RC Pro-Am
12. Duck Hunt

1. Super Mario 3

I remember some of these titles, hours of fun. I did not expect to see Blaster Master there.

Super Mario 2 was better than Super Mario 1.

Ninja Turtles 2 was better than Ninja Turtles 3.

Duck Hunt is not that good of a game and neither is Excite Bike for any length of play.

Battletoads, Dr.Mario, Tetris, kirby, double dragon, final fantasy, dragon warrior, maniac mansion, cyberball should be on the list.

Add it to the pile. In a lot of ways, though, I gotta say I like their list more than the order you'd find on the metalists (I'd take RC Pro-AM, Ninja Turtles 3, Duck Hunt, and Excitebike over Donkey Kong, easy).

Acclaimed Games Top 1000 Video Games of All Time Metalist: Top NES Games
  1. (2) Tetris
  2. (29) Super Mario 3
  3. (51) Super Mario Bros.
  4. (83) The Legend of Zelda
  5. (101) Mega Man 2
  6. (127) Donkey Kong
  7. (160) Pac-Man
  8. (187) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
  9. (206) Contra
  10. (251) Metroid
  11. (252) Sid Meier's Pirates!
  12. (276) Double Dragon
  13. (277) Super Mario Bros 2
  14. (350) Bubble Bobble
  15. (375) Lode Runner
  16. (401) Ninja Gaiden
  17. (414) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  18. (456) Castlevania
  19. (469) Arkanoid
  20. (471) Ghosts 'n Goblins

When polled explicitly on what the greatest games of all time are, a survey of many of the most esteemed people working in video games came back with just three NES games making the Top 100, and Tetris technically isn't considered one of them since it wasn't originally for that platform.
GQ May 2023 Greatest Games of All Time Industry Meta-Poll
  1. (3) Tetris
  2. (36) Super Mario Bros 3
  3. (96) Super Mario Bros.

*Edit* Also, btw, Rolling Stone just made a Top 50 Games of All Time list, and not a single NES game made the list:

I liked Ninja Turtles 2, Mega Man, Double Dragon, Double Dragon 2, Castlevania, Super Mario 2, Marble Madness, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, and Kung Fu, but then those were also video games I had access to as a child. None of which made the Rolling Stone list.

This is all FACTS. The fact that Ninja Turtles 3 is on this list is laughable. That game compared to the first two has terrible controls. Ninja Turtles 2 was superior by every standard especially considering it was a hybrid of the arcade game and it added 2 additional stages not in the arcade. I would even argue that Kung Fu is better than Duck Hunt and Excite Bike.

If duck hunt wasnt bundled with smb, nobody would care about it.

River City Ransom should be in place of Super Dodge Ball, and the second Ninja Turtles game was WAY more iconic and popular than 3.

A lot of this is recanting on those games a person liked as a child, I did not own all of them but I have a good understanding of most games. Ninja Turtles 2 was a classic and one of my favorites

My brothers and I loathed Super Mario Bros. 2.

We played the shit out of the Double Dragons and Kung-Fu, but the arcade versions, not the Nintendo version. They were at our favorite local pizza places, not Chuck E Cheese.

My friends were into Castlevania but I couldn't get into it as a kid. Also played Ninja Gaiden but don't remember being crazy about it.

We played console and arcade versions of the Ninja Turtle games, but I don't remember have strong feelings about the difference between 2 and 3. I checked out some gameplay vids to remind myself of the difference, and the biggest thing I noticed is that 2 was the version you could find everywhere in arcades. I don't recall 3 being that widespread.

Like others in here, I loved Kirby, but I spent more time on the Game Boy installments like Dream Land because those were staples of a little carry-on knapsack I had for travel & swim meets and shit like that. Same story for Dr. Mario. Adored DuckTales.

Didn't play Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, River City Ransom, Maniac Mansion, Cyberball, or Freedom Force as a kid. Didn't get into Metroid until Super Metroid.

Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't even a Mario gem when it was initially made. It was rebranded to get something out the door. It doesn't feel cannon but I like it just because it is kind of weird and did a lot of stuff interesting. It is more like Super Pitfall than Super Mario Bros. 1.

Castlevania to me is a very mixed bag because there was dumb shit in it that you needed someone to tell you where it was or had the correct issue of the magazine Nintendo Power.

Others that were standouts were Lulu's Adventures,

I agree with Startropics.

Blaster Master was extremely hard but I don't think I would put it in the same list as Super Mario Bros 3. That is a fun game even today.

4 player Bomberman 2 on the NES was a blast, especially with 4 players but that game was ported to every system. That was a blast of a game.

Ninja Gaiden 1-3 were good games.

Contra I think hasn't aged well. It was one of the first but I wouldn't bother ever playing it again. If you want to start with the series, start with the SNES Super Contra.

RC-Pro AM is legit fun though the two player mode is a little odd with shared screen but it is legit with good controls.

Gauntlet on the NES is one of the best ports of the arcade game but it gets left off because Tengen bypassed the NES blocked chip. The NES probably had the best ports of Pacman, Ms.Pacman, Galaga, Dig Dug, and Mario Bros.

RBI Baseball is maybe the best baseball game or maybe Baseball Stars but Cyberball is more fun with its wackiness.

Tetris should be there as it is often considered the cannon port and is used in competitions.

Hogan's Alley is a much better light gun game than Duck Hunt.

I am not sure why Bionic Commando is on the list. Might as well put Ironsword there if you want a scroller like that game.

Little Nemo was legit fun with good graphics

Metal Storm is a sleeper

Marble Madness should be on the list and I would play this game today

I enjoyed Double Dragon 1-3. 3 was kind of weird but fun.

If you were to play one game though on the NES, it would be Super Mario 3. That cartridge was supped up with extra memory and stuff but that was by far peak NES.

Have you played Freedom Force? IMO, it was the best lightgun game on the NES and it's not even close. Wild Gunman would be a distance second.

Haven't played Freedom Force but like Prefect says Hogan's Alley seemed solid to me, just played a few times though.

Gents, personally I would've put Zelda II: Adventures of Link on the list but I understand that's from a very subjective place and honestly haven't even played all of these 20

My list of games that could be in a top 20.

  • Duck Tales 1 & 2.

  • Vice Project Doom
  • Gargoyle's Quest 2
  • Double Dragon 2
  • Metal Gear
  • Shatterhand
  • Bucky O'Hare
  • Micro Machines

  • Journey to Silius
  • Power Blade
  • Litlte Samson

Exactly.

The only disappointing point about TMNT2 was you couldn't play with 3 or 4 people but then again it was probably damn near the limit of what the NES could handle. TMNT3 was forgettable. Turtle 2 was beloved because it was the arcade version and kids that wanted to play the arcade game cheaply got it with this NES version.

At least one of the Double Dragon games should be top 20 (either DD1 or DD2).
Duck Tales was awesome and is a top 20 NES game in my book.
Also loved Zelda II but I know it's it's not a fan favorite. but it is the version that made me fall in love with the Zelda series.
Even though Mario 2 wasn't traditional Mario it was one of my favorites. 4 different types of characters to choose from, a weird world with new enemies. Yes I know it wasn't originally a Mario game but so what? It was fun as hell. Jumping on top a flying egg, picking it up midair and then throwing back at the enemy (Birdy?). That was fun!

Personally I think Dragon Warrior should also be on the list due to its historical importance. It was offered as a free gift with a subscription to Nintendo Power and it introduced me to the world of RPG. But this one is a very personal choice as I know there are far better RPGs in the NES era.

Man, RC Pro-Am was life when I was a kid. I played most games on this list, with Super Mario 3 getting the most hours out of me. But RC Pro-Am was not far behind. I'll curse those oil slicks to the day I die.

I think Double Dragon and BattleToads were left off the list due to its insane difficulty. I know games like Ninja Gaiden is hard but I found Double Dragon and especially BattleToads much more difficult. I think difficulty unfortunately hurts love of the game.

Also, as revolutionary as Super Mario Brothers 1 was Super Mario Brothers 2 is the superior game. A super jump, every character having a different type of jump and all the different types of enemies makes this game better. Mario 3 was the best of them all but Mario 2 held its own.

Have you played Freedom Force? IMO, it was the best lightgun game on the NES and it's not even close. Wild Gunman would be a distance second.

I have never played Freedom Force. I knew about Wild Gunman and Hogan's Alley because of the arcade and the first person shooters were highly popular at the time.

I found the opposite for DD and Ninja Gaiden.

Yes DD was very hard but there was very well known glitch where you can fully level up on the 2nd stage which made the game a bit easier since you had all the moves at your disposal. I was able to beat DD pretty easily this way. Not only that but had i known and realized that you could use one move (back elbow) to beat the entire game I would have laughed and downgraded DD cause it would have been way too easy of a game to beat.

Ninja Gaiden was to me WAY WAY harder. You had to memorize and known all the enemy patterns and the last stage was especially brutal because if you died at any sections of the final boss you had to run that whole gamut again to reach him. It was the OG of annoying runbacks to fight a boss. The only cheese in the game was the infinite 1UP technique. Without that i don't think I would have EVER beaten Ninja Gaiden (pretty sure there was a limited number of continues).

Battletoads was impossible to me. I never gave it enough dedicated gaming time to it since I never owned it but I hated the racing portions of the game.

From my youth I remember most of these games, I might not know all of the games but again I have an understanding what people are referring to. I agree with Ninja Turtles 2. I knew about Double Dragon because I had that one.

I knew of Tetris, Dr. Mario, and Battletoads and they were all very fun. A lot of times it was just being in the right type of mood to play the game and that made the difference. There were games like Top Gun, Spy Hunter, and Jackal which I enjoyed depending on what type of mood I was in at the time.

I found DD pretty easy once you exploit its AI. I believe what you did is that you did a run elbow above the enemy and they walk into it trying to line up with you. You see this in a lot of games. Battle Axe the arcade had this same issue. Same with Mat Mania, too.

Of course it hurts a game's standing in these lists. They're still single player games. So at least they have a chance.

Why do you think games that revolve almost entirely around competitive online multiplayer play almost never rank on these charts, and when they do, they are really low, despite that games of that type consume an overwhelmingly disproportionate amount of total gaming hours played, and also tend to dominate the charts of games with the highest player counts?

Generally good list, in good order.

Personally I'd take out StarTropics and replace with Dr. Mario. Probably toss Duck Hunt for something like Final Fantasy.

Super Dodge Ball can get replaced with River City Ransom all day, every day.

Did you own Little Samson.
