Top 10 Reasons Why David Lynch Sucks.

I thought Dune was a project he disowned during production and was released as an Alan Smithee, probably not the best thing to use to judge him, but weirdly also probably the one movie he made before 2005 that people will hate purely on merit.

I don't like most of his work, but I have a hard time seeing it as bad. There's stuff even in eraserhead that connects. I have a similar feeling toward Harmony Korine. Unless he gets a marvel franchise, I'll likely never watch anything he makes again, but I can't bring myself to think his movies are bad, they're just poor entertainment.

Have only seen Dune of his movies. Loved the book. Hated the movie.

Obviously my only impression of him is not a good one.

David Lynch is one of the few true artists in Hollywood. He never sold out, he never made a film for the money, he never strayed from his personal muse. You may not like his work, but the man deserves respect. I love everything he's ever done EXCEPT Dune. Please don't judge the guy based on Dune. That the person who made the video is too stupid to know that you capitalize the first letters of proper names, and that the first reason why David Lynch sucks - that only hipsters like him - is also stupid, have made me give watching the video a pass. I'm really hoping you posted this to troll David Lynch fans, and not because you've decided you really don't like David Lynch. To me, that says everything about you, and nothing about David Lynch.

the video shouldn't be taken serious though... ha

but can we talk about how terrible Dune is/was. why the fuck is it so bad? is Lynch just not good with big budget epic style narrative?

I didn't really mean the "waste of my time" thing to be harsh sounding, I just don't really care for those Cinema Sins type videos. If I enjoy something, I don't really need to watch something that attacks it. Honest critique is fine, as long as it's not an attack and is meant as more of a discussion.

Dune had a ton of producer meddling, it's the one film of his that Lynch seems to have bad feelings towards. He doesn't disown it, but he doesn't feel it's what he set out to make.
I enjoy it, but I like a lot of films that most people wouldn't I just have odd eclectic tastes.
It's also a story that's tough to contain in a single film.

Agree/Disagree?

I just caught the last 30 minutes of Dune on BBC America (I've seen it entirely before) and holy shit, what a travesty of a movie. I can't imagine a good director being able to make something so terrible....wtf.

Disagree.

Bunch of people threatened by art they don't understand. Well, the accessible David Lynch is just as brilliant.

Also, the facetiousness of the irony is overbearing. I suspect Lynch would find trolling this heavy-handed as low-brow as Bay's films.

I think Dune is pretty terrific, frankly.

Overall I don't think it's a good film, but even so I still remember a lot about it (As someone who's never read a Dune book). The last thing it is is forgettable. Baron Harkonnen is a classic Lynch villain up there with Frank Booth, BOB, Marietta and Bobby Peru ...

not watching the video... to not understand Lynch is one thing but to say he sucks is objectively wrong...

The amusing thing is that the OP doesn't seem to realise the video is actually making fun of more simplistic lynch criticism.

"he's old"

"he has silly hair"

"he doesn't direct superheromovies"

etc

Lynch disowned the TV cut of Dune with Alan Smithee, basically because whilst it introduces some new material he might have wanted in the cinema release its really cheaply done with a terrible intro and badly looped soundtrack over man scenes.

Lynch can def. get too weird for me sometimes (Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive ending, Inland Empire), but i mostly love his work.

Wild at Heart is crazy and just the right Film for Nic Cage & Willem Dafoe.
Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet is one of the most menacing performances ever on Film.

I'd rank em

Blue Velvet
Lost Highway
The Straight Story
Elephant Man
Wild at Heart
TP. Fire Walk with me

Mulholland Drive
Dune
Inland Empire
Eraserhead

That video was made by a retard who doesn't know correct spelling and grammar. Hardly the person to offer criticism of a sophisticated director like Lynch.

It's true that Dune is a mess and the new Twin Peaks was a bit hit and miss. Personally, I didn't care for Mulholland Drive either. But Wild at Heart is amazing, Blue Velvet is great and the original Twin Peaks had some of the best episodes ever in a tv-show until present times.

Lynch is one of a kind, we need more individuals like him in cinema and less franchise schlock.

LOL

His films don't even have superheroes or robots in them.......what a dud.

Again the video itself is obviously poking fun at less educated criticism of Lynch which makes it quite amusing the OP seemed to think it was serious.

If your looking for modern Lynch(mixed in with some Kubrick) like cinema I would suggest Yorgos Lanthimos with films like Dogtooth, The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer

I would maybe agree on Dune being a bit poop..

But mostly the rest of his work is stella, they can take you places other movies could only imagine.

My first memory of Lynch is going to see a double bill of Blue Velvet and Betty Blue. Didn't know anything about either of them but we were bored and looking for something to do. Betty Blue was on first and that turned out to be a really good movie, Beatrice Dalle was crazy and hot as fuck. Blue Velvet came on and when it got to the famous Dennis Hopper scene I started hearing a lot of movement. I looked round and saw the place emptying out. I saw some woman literally dragging her guy out of his seat. I thought that was pretty great. I just wish he hadn't turned down the chance to direct Return of the Jedi. Imagine what that would have been like.

oh look at mr. elitist intellectual over here discrediting legitimate criticisms just because the video doesn't employ traditional use of language. you really gotta look at what the video is not saying to get to the deeper meaning of what it is saying!

I love Lynch. I've never thought much about his films in terms of trying to figure their meaning and subtext and symbolism and all that shit. But his shit is usually packed with brilliant characters and scenes anyway

Kin eh.

I guess as someone who has read the book it felt like someone took a giant shit on the source material. Even if you just look at the movie without thinking of the book it is embarrassingly bad considering the director is so highly regarded.

I don't like david lynch and i don't care if you think less of me because i don't like david lynch.
the video shouldn't be taken seriously but is still meant to open up discussion on the topic.

i'm honestly shocked that so many lynch fans who are into his form of film-making don't realize an obviously not-meant-to-be-serious incredibly shitty youtube video.
